Access products from Kwik-Step
Innovative products providing safe and cost-effective access to rail and highways networks will be exhibited by Kwik-Step. Among these will be the Kwik-Step Modular Refuge. Made with lightweight GRP composites, it is designed for installation by the customer’s own teams at the trackside. With pre-assembled base frames and minimal site preparation, installation is quick and simple, requiring no special skills. Secured with the patented Track Anchor, the refuge is ready for immediate use. Also featured will be the Modular Walkway, for which 2.5m GRP modules are bolted together to make a continuous walkway of any length, providing a continuous safe walking route over degraded or unstable lineside areas. Secured with the Track Anchor, the lightweight structure causes minimal disturbance and loading on the track and embankment. Other products showcased by Kwik-Step will include
stairways designed for permanent installation on embankments and cuttings, and used extensively on Network Rail and LUL infrastructure. Galvanized steel modules are surface-mounted with steel pins driven diagonally into the slope, with minimal groundwork and no foundations. The
firm says this achieves direct cost savings of 25-30% and time savings of up to 80% compared with conventional construction methods. In addition, Kwik-Step will showcase platforms to provide access to bridges and other structures for inspection and maintenance. The 2.5m galvanized steel modules are delivered flat-packed with all the components and tools needed for installation on site.
Kwik-Step’s Modular Walkway demonstrated at Long Marston Temporary roadways for rail projects
Heavy duty temporary aluminium roadways for use during rail infrastructure projects will be featured by TPA. The company says it is Europe’s largest supplier of temporary access and ground protection solutions to the rail market, leading to the development of robust, long term trading relationships with a wide range of customers in this sector.
With a head office in Worksop and satellite depots in Lesmahagow (Glasgow), Milton Keynes and Winslow, a UK-wide service is available.
The company also has a facility in Ireland and branches in Germany. TPA’s network of regional field sales engineers work with clients to ensure optimum cost versus performance, alongside provision of the most appropriate ground protection solutions for the effective movement of people, equipment and vehicles. TPA is currently internally testing and
developing plastic ground protection panels with a view to integrating these into its product base later this year.
Innovative RamPad
Innovative Support Systems (ISS) will be displaying its innovation for foundation solutions – the Aspin RamPad. ISS teamed up with Aspin Group to produce this simple foundation for lightweight structures, comprising a steel mesh matrix which can be used as a foundation for applications such as lighting columns, speed signs and level crossing structures of steel or GRP. The RamPad matrix is 100% steel, providing its strength, and once galvanised has a life span of more than 120 years. Minimum on site operation is required, it is easily transportable and can be installed in most weather types. It is also highly sustainable, comprising up to 90% recycled material and,

says ISS, is an inexpensive and safer solution. The RamPad is of particular
relevance to the rail industry as it does not interfere with the tamping of track. Buried services can pass through it and incoming cable ducts can be fixed with the steel mesh matrix. Instant superstructure loading can also be tolerated as no wet trades, which need first to gain strength, are required.
Phil Richardson of ISS
says: “The reception we have received from the rail industry is that it’s something they have been looking for for many years. RamPad will save time and money, and can be carried out in all weathers, on many occasions with no need for possessions”.
Van Elle enhances its capabilities
A recent development by Van Elle, which claims to be the UK’s leading ground engineering contractor, has been the launch of its specialist Rail Division, encompassing complete design, contract management, plant and customer service capabilities in a single team.
At Infrarail the company will

showcase its extensive range of specialist rail services and products, including ground investigation, piling and embankment stabilisation solutions. To further enhance its ability to design, install and test thick wall steel tubular piles of up to 610mm diameter in restricted access locations, working within possessions or from an RRV or track/wheel- mounted excavator, Van Elle has recently purchased a Movax SG50V side-grip pile hammer and BSP DX-RT20 top-driven impact hammer. As the only company in the UK to own the former, it is able to offer clients unrivalled production rates using one of the most efficient and environmentally friendly pieces of equipment in the market today. Whether a project involves piling for platform extensions, canopies, signal and gantry bases or OLE, Van Elle says it has the experience, plant and expertise.
