New engineering degree course
University of Derby Corporate (UDC) will be launching its new BEng (Hons) Professional Engineering degree at Infrarail. The course is designed to fit into the Engineering Council’s Gateways programme, allowing learners to progress to chartered engineer status, and can be tailored to several pathways, including mechanical, electrical and railways. The programme will
build upon the University of Derby’s success in delivering work based degrees, with tutorials taking place on Friday afternoons and Saturdays to minimise disruption to business. UDC brings together the
University's key services for business, offering a professional service, solely focused on working with organisations to develop higher level skills in their workforce through
work based learning. It develops flexible bespoke programmes for employers, from short courses to a full three-year corporate degree. Options include higher apprenticeship frameworks, professional development and short courses for individuals. UDC can also provide customised online learning platforms, which are perfect for supporting learning and development in
organisations. For many employers, an adaptable work-based course is the answer to their skills gap or business problem. UDC delivers programmes for organisations including NSARE, Alstom and Vinci. In November 2013 UDC won two Training Journal Awards and scooped the Times Higher ‘Outstanding Employer Engagement Initiative’ category in 2011.
Inspiring ‘Generation Y Rail’
The UK rail industry is full of remarkable talent and has been a consistent incubator of innovation during its lifetime, resulting in an industry bursting with inspirational people, a vast array of career opportunities and some of the most exciting engineering projects across the globe. With so many compelling reasons to pursue a career in the UK rail industry, why do so many of the 12-19 year old students studying in the UK remain oblivious to these opportunities? The answer is simple: many of them just haven’t been told. Until now! At Railtex 2013 the UK Rail Industry Training Trust (UKRITT) was launched.
A charity launched by Rail Technology Magazine, UKRITT set out its plans to promote the wide and diverse range of exciting career opportunities on offer in the rail industry to young people via a series of educational and engagement events across the country as part of a national competition called ‘Gen Y Rail’. ‘Gen Y Rail’ consists of a series of regional heats across the Northeast, Northwest, West Midlands, East Midlands (delivered by iRail) and London, culminating in a national final. The students are split into teams within their respective age groups and given a rail engineering challenge to solve. They
will then go on to present their solutions to a Dragons’ Den-style panel of judges, with one team from each age group from each region going through to the national final. The winning team from each age group will be crowned ‘UK Champions’. Each student participating in these events will also receive the British Science Association CREST Discovery award. Roy Rowlands, Business
Development Director at Rail Technology Magazine and UKRITT Trustee, said: “We have been swamped with support for this national programme of educational and engagement events and

are delighted that so many organisations have backed this initiative. Among our next step is the appointment of a board of independent trustees to help oversee the running of the charity. We are also in discussions with the Smallpeice Trust, which will assist UKRITT in expanding its reach from hundreds to thousands of students during the academic year 2014/15.”
