Commercial truck conversion kits: HO scale Mfd., by GC Laser, P.O. P.O. Box 621, Genoa City, WI 53128; www.gclaser.com Following on the release of the 1941- 46 Chevrolet commercial and pickup trucks by Classic Model Works, GC Laser has taken a cue from its early product introductions by creating a se- ries of modification kits to create an ex- panded variety of truck beds for these newer trucks. GC Laser now offers truck bed kits for Classic Model Works’ 1941-46 single and double axle semi- tractors, lightweight utility trucks and pickup trucks. The line includes flatbed and stake bed kits for the semi-tractors and lightweight utility trucks and a camper conversion for the pickup truck. We received samples of the flatbed

and stake bed conversions for the tan- dem or dual axle semi-trucks. Each kit consists of two sheets of laser-cut mi- cro-plywood parts, a set of instructions and a laser-cut deck. Construction of the kits begins with construction of the bed frame. It should be noted that there is a front end and a back end of the main frame rails, as well as a dif- ference between the rear center beam and the remaining two center beams. A series of cross members are added to the frame. These cross members each have their part designation (“A” through “I”) etched on them, making it easy to keep them in order during as- sembly. The flatbed has a two piece bulkhead attached at the front. The frame assembly is painted an appropriate color for the business it

will represent. The decks are left un- painted and cemented in place on the frames. The assembly of the flatbed is complete, but the stake bed needs to have its side and end panels built and installed. The panels are assembled in place on the micro-ply sheet by gluing the upright stakes using the etched guidelines for placement. After the ce- ment has set, the panels are cut from the micro-ply sheet and installed in the recesses provided in the deck. Installation of the new truck bed as- semblies requires some minor adjust- ments to the Classic Model Works trucks. The fifth wheel assembly must be pried from the truck’s frame, and four small ribs on the inside of the truck frames must be shaved flush with the surface of the frames. Once these ad- justments are made, the new beds slip into place on the truck frames. These new truck conversions are a nice little one night project which will allow the modeler to create some addi- tional variety in the transportation op- tions on the layout.
