Railfan for Life

Enjoy a rich journey across the American railroading landscape through the lens of our founder Hal Carstens!

made of .014″ diameter wire, brake rods, coupler lift bars and air hoses. The interior sides, ends and slope- sheets are accurately detailed with riv- ets. The train air line runs along the bottom of the right side. The trucks are by Accurail and rep-

resent ARA cast-steel sideframe trucks with spring planks. They have .011″ thick metal wheels on metal axles that are very free rolling. Factory-installed Kadee No. 58 couplers are mounted in narrow-style draft boxes attached by Phillips screws. The ready-to-run mod- el weighs 2.5 ounces due to its cast- metal bottom.

In this new book from Carstens, you’ll enjoy more than 100 pages of color photos selected by our editors spanning Hal’s trackside adventures from the last sixty years. From coast to coast, from steam to diesel (and trolleys, too),

from main lines to short lines and everything in between!

The review model, C&O 130027, had the appropriate features of its proto- type including arched Dreadnaught ends with outward-facing channel end posts, Ajax power hand brake and steel brake step. The paint color and finish on the review model was excellent, however, the black color was so intense it somewhat limited the full apprecia- tion of some of the fine detail. The review model, with built date 9-

36, had the as-built 9-inch tall, single- row Roman lettering applied from 1934 until 1948. The lettering of the prototype was accurately reproduced on the review model including the trust agreement. Initially, InterMountain is releasing 16 models having five different end variants. Each model is accurately dec- orated for the owner railroad with physical details appropriate for the railroad it represents. InterMountain offers the model with the first five of the six different end versions listed above. Examples of the five different ends are shown online at: 1.

The InterMountain website indicates

its AAR alternate standard hopper is initially available in the following au- thentic paint and lettering schemes: C&O, Nickel Plate Road, Erie, Wheeling & Lake Erie,

Clinchfield, Montour,

B&O, Cambria & Indiana, Litchfield & Madison, Minneapolis & St. Louis, AT&SF, Pittsburg & Shawmut, Pitts- burgh & West Virginia and Northern Pacific. All are black except AT&SF which is freight car red. Most schemes are available in six road numbers, how- ever the C&O and B&O are available in 12 numbers. InterMountain will likely offer this model in the future in addi- tional accurate paint schemes. The models are exquisite and true to the prototype car drawings from which they were derived. This is arguably the most detailed coal hopper model avail- able to-date. InterMountain product designers did an excellent job with a very high degree of attention to detail, and the Chinese manufacturer has done an outstanding job executing the design with the tooling, injection mold- ing, assembly, painting, lettering, and packaging. The overall workmanship is exceptional. This distinctive ready-to-run model

by InterMountain is an outstanding ac- curate model for the 1934 to 1970’s peri- od that will meet and exceed the expec- tations of modelers. This is the first HO model offered representing the AAR al- ternate standard design hopper. The model is securely packaged in a protec- tive package, and the price for the mod- el is $38.95.—JOHN RIDDELL
