Adding timetable and train order control to the C&W: Pt. II

Train order No. 2 (above) is a meet order for No. 81 and X4104E to meet at Coykendahl delivered to X4104E at Farron. A similar or- der was delivered to No. 81 at Coykendahl. This is a copy of the clearance issued to X4104E at Farron (above right). On the CPR, any time a train was restricted at a train order station, the operator needed to issue a clearance so it could continue. Kent Cavanagh, engineer of Extra 4104E, is pic- tured OS’ing his train at Cascade (right).

4104: “OS Farron.” Dispatcher: “Go ahead Farron.” 4104: “Extra 4104 East into Farron at 12:15.” Dispatcher: “Thank you.”

Train order No. 2 is addressed to Ex- tra 4104 East at Farron. As expected the dispatcher is setting up a meet be- tween our train and No. 81 at the next station down the line, Coykendahl. He has also issued a clearance to permit the train to get underway again as was CPR practice. All train orders require an accompanying clearance. In addi- tion, a train must not proceed without a clearance when a train order signal affecting it is in stop indication (rule 221). The crew reads the order and clearance and pushes the button on the train order panel to acknowledge that they have received the orders. With that acknowledgement, the dispatcher clears the train order signal against them. When the brake test is finished, the train eases out of the station, and the crew OS the dispatcher with their leaving time as their caboose passes Farron station. 4104: “OS Farron.” Dispatcher: “Go ahead Farron.”

While the dispatcher diligently en- ters the time on the trainsheet beside the extra’s information, Extra 4104 East makes its way carefully down the 2.2% grade and torturous curves along- side Dog and Pup creeks and into Coykendahl. No. 81 is occupying the

main (as a numbered train it is superi- or to Extra 4104 East) but their head end switchman has thrown the siding switch for us so we make our way into the hole. When we are clear of the main, the switch is realigned for the main and No. 81 makes its way up- grade. 4104 OS’s… 4104: “OS Coykendahl.” Dispatcher: “Go ahead Coykendahl.” 4104: “Extra 4104 East into Coyk-
