Kingdom (www.atlanticpublishers.com). Hardcover, 128 8¹₂″×11″ pages; £15.95, plus £11.34 postage to North America. This excellent new book from England by David Joy explores a fascinating range of locomotives used on narrow gauge railways around the world. My image of an articulated locomotive was for many years, a large Mallet like a USRA 2-6-6-2 or a UP 4-6-6-4 on a heavy train in Wyoming, or a Y6b on an endless Norfolk & Western coal train. Living in logging country, I also thought of Ray- onier 2-6-6-2’s or 2-6-6-2T’s. If I consid- ered it further, I might have added Shay and Climax locomotives, but to me they were geared engines, not articulated en- gines. Of course they actually are articu- lated engines because they do indeed bend to facilitate running on sharply curving trackage on logging railroads. In later years, I became exposed to many more types and sizes of interesting artic- ulated locomotives such as Bayer Gar- ratts, tiny Mallets used on sugar cane railroads, tank engines with driving wheels that could shift and turn, engines such as Fairlies, or Mason Bogies and so many more. This book chronicles the use of the many different types of narrow gauge articulated engines in different countries and the successes and failures of their applications. It gives a very good

summary of how wide spread articulated engines became, particularly in the first decades of the 1900’s. David Joy was the first editor of Nar-

row Gauge World, and his writing is well

organized, articulated nicely phrased and

easy to follow. The book is not highly technical, although the design features of

locomotives are ex-

plained clearly and in sufficient detail to provide a good understanding of their features. It explains well the dif- ferences, advantages and shortcomings of the various types of articulated loco- motives used on narrow gauge rail- roads. There is also interesting back- ground on the people, such as Robert Fairlie, who developed fascinating loco- motives or mechanical innovations. For model builders, this book sug- gests many types of locomotives that have been only rarely modeled in North America. However, the possibili- ties of interesting projects are many. European model manufacturers have available excellent examples of many types of articulated locomotives in a variety of scales, eras and gauges. If you have an opportunity to travel

to other parts of the world, but especial- ly to Europe, this book will provide in- formation on places to visit and rare or unusual types of locomotives to see, photograph, and hopefully ride behind. It is surprising, too, how many engines have been preserved. They include the oldest operational Mallet in the world, a tiny 0-4-4-0T built in 1891 and steam- ing on the Östra Södermanlands Järn- väg heritage line in Sweden. A much larger 0-6-6-0 Mallet with tender is on the Swedish Jädraas-Tallas Järnväg. The famous K-1, the first Bayer Gar- rett, is operational on the Welch High-
