eastern coal roads to transport coal from mines to railroad coal docks, utility com- panies, local power plants, and business- es using coal as fuel for heating and steel companies. They traveled widely over North America from 1934 to 1970’s. These hoppers were classified HM signifying an open top car with two di- vided hoppers, self-clearing, fixed ends and sides, and doors hinged crosswise to allow dumping between the rails. The offset-side feature was to maxi- mize the cubic capacity within a speci- fied car length, width and height. In the late 1920’s, two Van Swerin- gen brothers of Cleveland, Ohio con- trolled the Nickel Plate, Chesapeake & Ohio and Erie railroads. In 1929 the Van Sweringen organization created its Advisory Mechanical Committee


(AMC) in Cleveland to develop stan- dard designs for rolling stock of its rail- roads. By 1934, the AMC completed a design for a standard 50-ton hopper car. This design, AMC Specification 3- CSCH, has been referred to as the “AAR alternate standard” design as op- posed to the AAR standard design 50- ton hopper car which was approved by the AAR two years later in 1936. The AAR alternate standard design of 1934 had offset-sides with nine equally spaced,
