T e infotainment system includes the latest
software upgrades such as point of interest mapping, optional landscape imagery, live traffi c data and so much more. And of course, the system is fully compatible with any modern media device so you can stay fully connected on the go. T e latest Continental GT Speed off ers all the sophistication and luxury one expects to fi nd in a coupe but with the added thrill of open-top, wind-in-the-hair motoring at the press of a button. T e four-layer hood ensures excellent acoustic insulation and has been rigorously tested in all conditions from -30°C to +50°C. And according to Bentley, it can even withstand monsoon-force rain and still off er draft-free protection. But as I mentioned earlier, there is a whole lot more to the GT Speed Convertible than its appearance and rich array of techno treats. From the second the soft close door shuts behind you, there is an air of thrilling anticipation as you press the start button. First, there is a gentle purring sound, but with the slightest pressure on the accelerator the gentle purr transforms itself into a full-blown roar. It’s simply a case of making sure the 14-way
power adjusted seats are perfectly positioned and then it’s time for blast off . Powered by a 6.0-litre twin turbo-charged
petrol engine delivering an awesome 625PS and 800Nm of torque, the car reaches 60mph from a standing start in 4.1 seconds, then onto 100mph in 9.7 seconds and it fi nally red-lines at 202mph
– that equates to £1,000 for every mph! T e acceleration is incredibly quick but also deceptively smooth. T e car eff ortlessly reaches 70mph as it rips through its close-ratio eight- speed automatic transmission and a constant check on the speedometer is essential and highly recommended when driving the Bentley. All bumps, dips and potholes are wiped out
by the car’s excellent suspension system and with such impressive road-holding any corner can be attacked and conquered with ease. T is is mainly due to the car’s revised air suspension and damper system which results in improved agility and body control. But despite its supercar performance the Bentley doesn’t need any ugly spoilers because the double-horseshoe boot-lid generates all the downforce that is necessary - even at 200mph-plus. Safety features are very comprehensive and
there is the added reassurance of permanent all- wheel-drive to keep you fi rmly planted on the road even in the most severe weather conditions. As with all vehicles with supercar
capabilities, there is a downside and that is fuel consumption – you can almost watch the needle drop as you sit at a set of lights willing them to turn green. Offi cial fi gures (which are usually a little generous to the manufacturer) show that this particular Bentley can deliver 19mpg. T is is actually a 15 per cent improvement on its predecessor but with a 90-litre fuel tank it will still mean regular trips to the fi lling station.
But that really is a small price to pay for such a beautifully-crafted, sublime work of art that delivers the drive of a lifetime in a seemingly perfect, blissful and calm manner and all the time you can sit back and enjoy the pitch perfect sounds emanating from the 11-speaker Naim audio system. Commenting on the car, Bentley’s chairman and chief executive Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, said: “T e new GT Speed Convertible will appeal to drivers who seek the sensory thrills of the world’s fastest soft-top and the practicality of a year-round grand tourer, together with unrivalled levels of luxury and refi nement. It is designed for those who accept no compromise.” I think that perfectly sums up the GT
Speed Convertible and to be honest, if I spent £202k on a car I wouldn’t be prepared to compromise eithe r.
