A Night
Did you miss Rod Stewart in Las Vegas? Don’t worry, we’ve got just the ticket for you as musical Tonight’s the Night goes back on tour
ollowing a successful West End run and UK tour in 2006, the feel-good musical comedy Tonight’s the Night – the Rod Stewart Musical is going on
the road again, launching a new national tour in the North West in January 2014. If that wasn’t enough, it’s snagged former Sugababes- turned-theatre star Jade Ewen as one of its leading ladies. Inspired by the two time inductee of the
Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and Grammy Living Legend that is Rod Stewart, Tonight’s the Night sees award-winning writer and comedian Ben Elton – also behind We Will Rock You, the musical based on the songs of Queen – turn his attention to Stewart’s back catalogue. And with a career spanning five decades and over 200 million worldwide record sales – including an album that topped the UK charts only back in May 2013 - he is certainly not short of material. Ben Elton said: “Rod is such a totally
unique artist. I initially approached him about a musical because his songs are all about storytelling and I felt that a great story could grow from them.” Premiering at the West End’s Victoria
Palace Teatre in 2003 and drawing on Stewart’s iconic status, Elton’s story is set on the mean streets of Detroit and in the glamorous clubs of uptown LA. It follows Stu, a shy young man, so tongue tied that he cannot find the courage to declare his love to the girl of his dreams – in stark contrast to his hero Rod Stewart.
“I’m absolutely thrilled that this great show is touring the UK again”
In true Faustian style, one night Stu strikes a deal with the Devil, trading his soul for Rod’s. Although it seems like a good idea at the time, Stu discovers the hard way that you can’t find true love using another man’s moves and that Devil or no Devil, there’s only one Rod Stewart. Something that the man himself liked the sound of. Rod Stewart said: “In the past, any ideas
for musicals revolving around my songs just didn’t work for me. It was only when we were approached to do Tonight’s the Night that the idea really took off. I’m absolutely thrilled that this great show is touring the UK again.” Calling at 24 venues around the UK, the latest tour of the smash hit musical will premiere at Manchester’s Palace Teatre on 20th
January 2014 before moving to
Liverpool’s Empire Teatre later the same month and completing its run in Canterbury in August. Stephen Ainsworth, the Liverpool Empire Teatre Marketing Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be one of the first venues in the UK to present this brand new tour
of Tonight’s the Night. Rod Stewart is undoubtedly one of the country’s best-loved and best-selling recording artists, and this musical featuring all his classic hits is sure to be the perfect answer to the January blues.” In addition to featuring a world-class band, spectacular staging and choreography, Ben Elton’s book-turned-stage production also includes 25 of Rod Stewart’s iconic songs. Fans can not only expect Tonight’s the Night, Hot Legs, Baby Jane, Do Ya Tink I’m Sexy, Maggie May, Tis Old Heart of Mine, I Don’t Wanna Talk About It, Ooh La La, Some Guys Have All the Luck, Forever Young but also an arm- swaying rendition of Sailing - and rightly so. Singer and actress Jade Ewen, best known
for being a former member of Brit pop girl group Sugababes and for representing the UK at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, will also be adding to her previous theatre credits in The Lion King and Whistle Down the Wind by joining the cast as Dee Dee for a limited run. Joining Jade on stage will be Ben Heathcote
(Mamma Mia!, Tree Musketeers) as Stuart, Jenna Lee-James (We Will Rock You, Joseph) as Mary, Tiffany Graves (We Will Rock You, Sweet Charity) reprising her role as Satan/ Baby Jane and Andy Rees (Legally Blonde, A Chorus Line) as Rocky. Michael McKell, best known for playing Dr Nick West in Doctors, will also be reprising his role as ageing British musician Stoner until 26th
April 2014.
Tonight’s the Night will premiere in Manchester from 20th
January – 25th January
2014 before transferring to the Liverpool Empire Teatre from 27th February 2014.
January – 1st
