Jessup Unveils First
Master’s Level Program Master of Arts in Teaching
As William Jessup University continues to expand and grow, the greater Sacramento region’s only residential four-year university now welcomes master’s degree students to the vibrant campus community.
After two years of development, Jessup now offers a graduate degree program: a Master of Arts in Teaching.
“For more than a year, reviewers and accreditors put Jessup to the test, requiring institutional evidence of the university’s readiness to educate and serve advanced students on our campuses,” said Provost, Dr. Dennis Jameson. “Our accreditation demonstrates this task was accomplished with flying colors, which is significant as we move forward to provide future programs.”
Te inaugural program allows candidates to earn either a Single Subject or Multiple Subject California Preliminary Teaching Credential and a Master of Arts Degree in as few as 18 months.
Dr. Nathan Herzog is the Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of the M.A.T. program. Herzog best describes the program as an augmentation of Jessup’s existing credential program, adding “depth, detail and clarity” to the research aspect of it.
“While enrolled, candidates will gain practical experience in the field and essential research skills to develop into what we call a scholar-practitioner,” Herzog said. “For example, to provide the scholar practice, students will work on research papers, literature reviews, research methods, statistics and their thesis. As practitioners, students will observe, assist, student teach and work with partnership schools from our surrounding districts.”
Distinctive characteristics of the M.A.T. program include preparing students to be scholar-practitioner teachers while developing their depth of character. Students will also grow in collaboration skills through a cohort model all while having the opportunity to integrate faith and learning.
Tose entering the new program will be challenged to explore the best educational research, as well as become part of a solution designed to prepare teachers to make a difference in young people’s lives and impact the future of teaching.
Teaming with Herzog is Dr. Aisha Lowe who joins Jessup as a faculty member in the new program from her position as Executive Director of STAND UP for Great Schools. Lowe also served as the Director of Research for the California Charter Schools Association, and has taught at several institutions bringing an extensive background in research, education, and psychology.
Lowe completed all of her academic work, both undergraduate and graduate, at Stanford University and contributes to the educational community with many publications and presentations.
Jessup’s Education Department believes all teachers must emulate and encourage Christ’s character because of the direct impact they have on the lives of students. Character development has always been a central component of Jessup’s teacher education program and continues to serve as a foundational piece for the new program.
