Faculty Spotlight: Erin Ambrose Apples, Kale and Flying Pigs

Erin Ambrose loves to teach. Seven years ago she was teaching at Capital Bible College in Sacramento, traveling 40 minutes a day. Te commute was taking a toll and she was about to step down. Tat same week—it might have been the same day—Psychology Chair, Dr. Bev Wiens contacted Erin to ask if she would fill a vacant teaching position in the Psychology Department.

Now, seven years later, Erin is a veteran Jessup professor, cancer survivor, Ph.D. candidate and marathon runner. Her love for teaching is contagious. Erin received her B.A. from UC Davis in Psychology and her M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Sacramento State University. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. from Chicago School of Professional Studies in International Psychology. Her dissertation will focus on suicide in China.

Erin teaches Introduction to Psychology, Interpersonal Processes, Marriage and Family and Cross Cultural Issues in Psychology.

We asked Erin, Why Jessup?

“I feel called to encourage people. I love to inspire students to discover who they are and what they are going to do and be in the world. It’s fun to watch that transformation happen and see a student come in and watch their identity bloom. God is going to use them in the world. It’s phenomenal.”

Let’s break the ice…

Apples Passport

Erin has traveled to several countries. Her favorite adventure was her trip to Brazil where she worked with students impacted by poverty and lack of education.

Always passionate about health, Erin typically teaches during lunch and brings a bag of apples everyday to share with her class. Her morning routine cannot begin without a kale smoothie.

Warrior Pink

Erin was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in April 2012. She is now healthy, happy and cancer free!

Marathon

Ten-marathon finisher—that’s 262 miles of running. Her favorite marathon was the Flying Pig in Cincinnati, Ohio. She missed the Boston Marathon last spring because of her cancer treatment and, subsequently, the attack that followed.

Music

Running time is God time spent listening to worship music. For longer runs, she slows the tunes down with artists like Audrey Assad; to pick up her pace, she gets the mix going with Pandora.
