Dorms Nick Breitbart (‘07), Interim Dean of Students

Everett had spent the last four years of his life with many friendships, but all of them virtual. He had been trapped in an addiction to online computer games and did not have one “real world” person he could call a friend. Tis was his reality as he moved into the men’s hall. His experience in residence life would change him forever. Unable to hide behind his door in a wing full of 16 other freshmen and sophomore guys, he has been encouraged to begin a new journey, full of real people and real experiences with God.

Let down by a string of previous friendships, Meredith moved into the dorms fearful that past hurts would repeat themselves. She knew that God had called her to Jessup, but how could she ever survive living in a community with total strangers? Would they ever accept her for who she was? Her experience in residence life would change her forever. Trough the influence of her resident assistant and the mentorship of her resident director, Meredith hit her stride. Four years later, she still lives in the dorms, but now on the other side, being used by God as a resident assistant mentoring the new freshmen class.

Excited to fulfill his dream of playing college soccer but uncertain how his background would fit into a Christ-centered university, Sam moved into the apartments with serious apprehension. He did not grow up in a Christian home and was concerned that he would be an outsider in this completely new environment. Expecting to be judged, his experience in residence life would change him forever. Te guys in his apartment reached out to Sam and genuinely modeled to him the power of God’s love. After Sam and his roommates went to church together, he gave his life to the Lord and is still living for Him today.

Residence life is much more than Nerf battles, pajama parties and midnight runs to Taco Bell (although some freshmen may argue.) It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to share the college experience and grow in community. From the late night conversations on faith to the study groups in the lounge; from the camping trips to the beach to the exercise groups in the common area, residence life is transformational. God clearly altered the lives of Everett, Meredith, and Sam through residence life—who’s next?
