Travis Perkins as a transport analyst, running key performance indicators on the Group’s 3,000+ vehicles to highlight cost savings, fleet efficiencies and development opportunities. Within 18 months shewas promoted to solution design analyst, where she developed her skills in strategic transport modelling; understanding likely changes to transport operations and implementing operational changes into the business. A year laterHollie was promoted again to solution design manager where she manages the strategic direction and improvement of the group’s national transport operations andmanages a team of analysts to report KPIs back to the business. ogistics&Distribution is always a hotly contested category and this yearwas no exception. However, although the shortlistwas

long, the scoring mechanism brought the contest downto two equally high scoring entries, that of WileywithTGWandAndrewPagewithHatmill. Wiley’s European distribution centre in Bognor

Regis,West Sussex, is one of the leadingUK publisher distributors, dispatching tenmillion units to customers across 159 countries in 2012.With growing order volumes the company decided to embrace automation and chose toworkwithTGW on implementing a solution that included blended kits, mobile bins, put-to-light, two sorters, auto packing, camera vision system – and all interfaced with upstreamand downstream suppliers and service partners. The judgeswere impressed by the results – a 400

per cent increase in productivity and a 40 per cent reduction in variable cost. The presentation was good and the benefitswere evident, whichmade it a tough choice for the judges. But on balance, the judges deemed thewinner to be Andrew Page with Hatmill. In reaching their decision the judges felt compelled toHighly CommendWileywithTGW. The entry fromthe fast growing automotive motor

factor, AndrewPage, centred on the company’s need for a new distributionmodel to support the expansion plans of the business following a management buyout. In partnershipwith consulting firm,Hatmill, the company planned a new national distribution centre, bringing retail supply chain concepts to the automotive parts sector. The existing operationwithmost suppliers

making deliveries direct to branches resulted in varying lead times and inconsistent levels of fulfilment of stock requested. The obvious solution was tomove to a centralised distributionmodel with processes that would allowthe centralisation of supplier deliveries, frequent replenishment of branch stock, control of the allocation of “what stock towhere”without increasing inventory in the end-to-end supply chain. To avoid duplicating stock already held in theUKby suppliers, the only viable option was to create a stockless central distribution centre. The idea of a cross docking operationwas borrowed fromthe fresh food sectors. According to the judges, the project “brings significant innovation to the auto parts sector – by introducing concepts fromfresh produce retail to create a competitive advantage to the business”. After considerable thought and discussion the trophywent to Andrew Page withHatmill.

Using data from the group's vehicle tracking system andworking closely with theHR and business heads, she is championing a Safer Roads Initiative which the group are about to launch whichwill report and highlight instances of speeding down to vehicle level and the coaching required to improve the standards of drivers to ensureTravis Perkins is leading the way for road safety in the construction industry.
