Tesco, Argos with Kuehne +Nagel, andDebenhams withDHLSupply Chain. Tesco has one of the largest andmost diverse supply chains in theworld, its international business nowspans 12 countries. It wanted to introduce continuity to its supply chain processes across themarkets it serves and so assigned a dedicated group of specialists, the Supply Chain Blueprint team, to apply best practice
locally. The results in terms of gaps on shelves and decreases in stock holdingwere impressive. In the last 18monthsDebenhams has
experienced a significant growth in e-commerce activity. Supporting this growth the retailer has worked withDHLSupply Chain to create a highly agile supply chain that can expand or downsize as required – at times by 500 per cent. The entry centred on the company’s e-commerce start up operation at Sherburn,Yorkshire, where a close collaboration between retailer and 3PL has produced a slick operation offering cost efficiencies. The judgeswere impressed by the results – somuch so that they highly commendedDebenhamswith DHLSupply Chain. However there was one entry that stood out. Argos

and beer involves themanufacture, packaging and distribution of hundreds of products to over 180 markets from117 production and distribution
facilities. The company has set ambitious environmental targets for carbon, water andwaste, with a goal to reduce carbon emissions fromglobal production sites by 50 per cent by 2015. In the last threemonthsDiageo has completed a £6 million bio-energy project at itsGlenlossie distillery in Speyside, burning the spent grain fromwhisky
distillation. The judgeswere impressed by the entry that showed the company’s dedication and commitment to sustainability, even though the full benefitsmay not be seen for a few years to come. It was a close run thing, but the judges thought one other entry just had the edge. In 2011 Spirit Pub Company believed there was
room for improvement in their food distribution strategy for its 780managed and 480 leased pubs in theUK. Switching logistics service provider and workingmore collaboratively with Kuehne +Nagel, Spirit Pub Company has implementedmultiple
projects, including a supply chain consolidation exercise to create a “one-stop shop” delivery solution for all the company’s pubs using a direct ordering facility through the logistics service provider. A backhaul solution has also been introduced to enable waste recycling and a vendor managed inventory facility enables suppliers to store product in the 3PL’s depots and call off stock as andwhen required. The judges liked theway the Spirit Pub Company was using supply chain improvement to transformtheir business, enabling the company to focus on the customer experience. For this reason the Award for the Consumer Products categorywent to Spirit Pub Company.
digital retail”- a strategy that is already demonstrating clear quantitative and qualitative benefits for the retailer. It involves major changes to key processes, including sourcing, logistics, port strategy, container consolidation, vendor performance management and RDC direct logistics. The judges could clearly see the significance of
the changes to the business and the results so far. “The programmedemonstrates best in class governance, clear and disciplined performance and benefitsmeasurement, alongwith strong sponsorship fromcompany leadership,” say judges. “It’s a great example of where focusing on simple, core supply chain principles can bring big benefits to an organisation and howa truewin-win partnership can produce results.” The Award had to go to Argoswith Kuehne +Nagel.
