things we love

caroline loves... These faux wooden planks in the location of the Poinsettia shoot. They are actually heavy duty porcelain tiles that look… and feel… just like real wood as they even have a raised fi nish but being tiles are perfect for wet areas like a fl orist shop. At around £45 a sq m not the cheapest but amazing to look at… we thought they were real to begin with.

What Derek Isaac of SuperNature did at the Radisson St Pancras where I was meeting a client. He does the fl owers every week and even the concierge is impressed. From a business perspective I loved the commercial-ness of it, from a design point it just looked fab. Simple but oh so eff ective use of green cymbidium and bear grass in a variety of forms that gave max impact for relatively low outlay. I’ve put all the designs on my website blog if you want to see more. (Check out the Editor’s Blog on thefl orist.co.uk)

emily loves... I saw so many gorgeous gift items at Tendence, the huge trade fair in Frankfurt at the end of August. It’s a great indicator of next year’s trends (more on this coming up on thefl orist.co.uk). I recommend it to anyone looking to get ahead of the game in their giftware and sundries lines by off ering something new and unique. In amongst all of this one

business really stood out for me, and put an instant smile on my face. German company Tom’s Drag off ers a fabulous range

Hannah loves... Malmaison Carnations! Admittedly I didn’t used to be a big fan of carnations… but now they’ve won me over, Malmaisons especially so! Read about them on page 11. Collection holder Jim Marshall may not agree with me here but I reckon there’s something sweet and sort of scrappy about the Malmaison that makes me want stand up for them against those perpetual fl owering bullies that have taken over the carnation marketplace! And I do love their delicate curled petals and deep scent – they have a vintage feel that makes them much more romantic than regular varieties!

The incredible eye for detail put into the Jane Packer exhibit at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. I love the quirky use of fl owers in unusual places, like chrysanths acting as fl our piled up in weighing scales, reddish-brown carnations tucked inside a tea pot, yellow gerbs acting as a cheese sandwich fi ller, and little glass bubbles of hydrangea hanging from a shop awning. See it all by searching ‘Jane Packer High Street’ on thefl orist.co.uk. I was so amazed by the amount of care and attention put into every single square foot!
