Chemical Etching the next generation of resonating biosensors

ABB drive makes British Airways Flight Simulator quieter

ritish Airways (BA) Pilots are benefiting from a quieter Flight Simulator environment following the installation of ABB drives in an Air Handling Unit (AHU) at the their Flight Training Centre near London’s Heathrow Airport. The AHU is used to cool the flight deck and instruments on one of their Boeing 777 Flight Simulator’s. Previously the AHU’s fan motor was run at constant speed but generated high noise levels. By using a 5.5 kW ABB HVAC drive at 39 Hz, the same flow rate can be obtained at a lower motor speed, resulting in a reduction in noise from 80 dBA to 73 dBA. Reducing the unwanted background noise generated by the supply fan has made it easier for the crew to hear conversations and spoken instructions.

ighland Biosciences Limited, creator of leading edge diagnostics technologies, has partnered with Precision Micro in the development and manufacture of a miniaturised ‘tuning fork’ biosensor.

The

component forms an essential part of HBL’s proprietary microviscometer, that is claimed will improve the safety of a number of medical procedures by providing results conveniently at the point of need. The biosensor design comprises of 3 micro engineered stainless steel tines, which resonate many thousands of times a second, detecting microscopic changes in film thickness, density and viscosity of a liquid sample and converting the presence of bacterial toxins into an electronic signal. With development now near to completion, the biosensor is being readied to make the transition to volume manufacture, expected to reach 50 million components over the next 5 years.

EWALT is a brand with a reputation for providing high quality professional power tools,

contractor tools and

accessories. The company's lead design engineer for drills was tasked with designing a high power right angle drill that was lightweight, compact, and portable. Special Spirol Disc Springs were ideal for this demanding, high performance application and design where the goal was to maximize performance while minimizing the size of the tool. DEWALT contacted Spirol to discuss the Disc Spring design and they evaluated the design objectives/constraints. DEWALT tested Spirol’s recommended Disc Spring, (manufactured in the UK), and the tool far exceeded the cycle life requirement. By partnering together, DEWALT and Spirol determined the best Disc Spring design for the new angle drill, minimizing costly development time for both companies.

EMOX. The New Monobloc Cabinet from ETA Enclosures

C

omplimentary to the already established and popular range of ENUX Modular cabinets ETA enclosures have now introduced EMOX, its monobloc cabinet range. A direct replacement for ATB8 cabinets the EMOX range offers 27 standard stock sizes and utilises the full potential of ENUX optional modular components bringing an unrivalled choice and design flexibility to the customer.

New design features include a ‘Lift Style’ lock mechanism along with optional profiles that will allow total integration with the modular cabinet range of accessories. With both EMOX monobloc and ENUX modular cabinets using the same range of accessories a reduced stockholding of components provides a good cost saving.

control. Norbar, the world’s leading torque company, has designed the EvoTorque® to ensure that operators have the correct torque output from hard through to soft joints by utilising patent pending motor technology and control software. The EvoTorque® can also safely be used on pre-tightened bolts as part of a joint verification process. The range is available in both 110V and 230V versions. Importantly, the EvoTorque® is weather sealed to IP44 and equipped with a maintenance free motor. Torque control or angle control can be selected by the user on the tool and a clear signal on the tool indicates when the correct torque or angle has been achieved. Crucially, the EvoTorque® has a third party verified sound power of 72.3 dB (A) and vibration level of 0.304 m/s² which significantly reduces any possibility of medical or health and safety related issues such as hearing loss or White Finger during use.

£42,000 annually with reverse osmosis from Spirax Sarco

estons Cider is saving around £42,000 per year in fuel and water costs following the installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment unit from Spirax Sarco. The new RO system has reduced water and energy losses by cutting the amount of boiler blowdown and water needed. Accurate metering of fuel oil and water has pinpointed the savings, including 3,800 litres of oil saved over a 15-day period. What’s more, the savings are likely to be even higher than these measurements suggest because of reduced CO2 emissions and a lower Climate Change Levy (CCL), although these have yet to be quantified. The Westons Cider site in Much Marcle, Ledbury, makes cider and perry.
