Three-time U.S. champion Jeremy Abbott returned to his hometown of Aspen, Colo., on Dec. 14 for a “Thank You, Aspen” homecoming performance. More than 600 people attended the show at the Lewis Ice Arena, which featured performances by Olympic silver medalist and World champion Rosalynn Sumners, two-time U.S. cham- pion Alissa Czisny, two-time U.S. bronze medalist ice dancers Kim Navarro and Brent Bommentre, profession- al skaters Ashley Clark and Kelly Corcoran Smith, and U.S. junior silver medalist Mariah Bell and her older sis- ter Morgan. Peggy Behr, who coached Abbott during his early years as a skater, organized the show, which bene- fi ts the careers of local skaters. In addition to the show, Revolutions Skating Club and Abbott’s sister, Gwen Ab- bott Asmussen, helped organize a silent auction, with a portion of the proceeds benefi tting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Gwen and Jeremy’s father, Danny Abbott, has end-stage Parkinson’s disease and is in a full-care facility outside of Denver. Two-time Olympic pairs champions Liudmila and Oleg Protopopov participated in a free, one-hour skating lesson for members of the Skating Club of Lake Placid on Nov. 20. The club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. The lesson was open to skaters of all ages and abilities. Members enjoyed the one-on-one direction and interaction with the skating legends. “It was very gracious of them and an honor for our club to host the Protopopovs,” club vice president Tracey Ridenour said. “I love watching them skate,” longtime club member Maggie Atkins said. Inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1978, the Protopopovs spend time training in Lake Placid, N.Y., windsurf- ing in Hawaii and relaxing at their home in Switzerland. They’ve been married for 57 years. Pictured are Skating Club of Lake Plac- id coach Angie Gavin, her daughter, Abbey, and Liudmila and Oleg Protopopov.
The Amherst Skating Club in Williamsville, N.Y., con- ducted an Olympic theme day for skaters in its Skate With US program. As part of Destination Sochi and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, skaters were en- couraged to wear red, white and blue; dress as those who compete in their favorite Olympic sport; or dress as their favorite Olympian. “Many of our skat- ers dressed as fi gure skaters and hockey players,” Amherst SC Director Stacy Petri said. “Each class also concluded with a “Go USA” chant. Skaters played team games such as relay races and pass the puck. “You could really feel the Olympic spirit at our rinks when the skaters were cheering each other on,” Petri said. After the classes ended, the skaters received a U.S. Figure Skating gift and information on the Desti- nation Sochi Family Tree Program.
