2006 OLYMPICS — Torino

2006 OLYMPICS —Torino

Pairs skaters Marcy Hinzmann and Aaron Parchem went to Torino intent on savoring every moment of the Olympic experience, because they

Although ice dancers Melissa Greg- ory and Denis Petukhov had been married for five years by the time of the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, Olympic village rules did not allow for coed rooms. The figure skating team leaders kindly assigned Gregory and pairs skater Rena Inoue as roommates and put Petukhov with Inoue’s partner/boyfriend John Baldwin Jr. The skaters adapted the rooming arrangements. Baldwin went to an Ikea and decked out his and Inoue’s room with fur- niture and accessories.

knew it would be their one and only opportunity. Despite having their short program the next night, they proudly marched in the Opening Ceremony, where Parchem heard his mother shouting to him, because his parents had moved down from their seats to near the field. Since pairs finished early, Hinzmann was quite the organizer, seeing to it they attended numerous events, including hockey and speedskating. Wherever they went, locals were excited about the Olympics and asked anyone dressed in team apparel to pose for photos.

Mirai Nagasu felt comfortable going into the United States Olympic Committee offices daily and visiting with the people there, and in good humor gave everyone nicknames. In turn, they nicknamed her Eggnog. They made a laminated sign and put it on the wall and gave her a desk in the office where she could hang out.

The U.S. team leaders for figure skating, Lorrie Reed Parker and Richard Dalley, each execut- ed their duties in stellar fashion. One of Dal- ley’s assignments was rooming arrangements. Everyone on the team, as well as coaches, judges and officials, occupied one floor in a building in the Olympic village. Contrary to widely published reports, Tanith Belbin and Johnny Weir did not share a room. They ac- tually shared a two-bedroom, two bathroom apartment. Everyone shared a bedroom with one other person, but Belbin and Weir had their own rooms, as did Evan Lysacek in anoth- er apartment, because they were second-time Olympians. Weir arrived first and took occupancy of the bigger bedroom. Ben Agosto stayed in what was dubbed the “Michigan” apartment with Charlie White, Evan Bates and Jeremy Abbott.

Beyond Lorrie Reed Parker’s myriad of team leader responsibilities, she also took great pleasure in creating festive décor. John and Holly Cole (U.S. national judges), who own a Party City store (party suppliers), donated extensive decorations. Parker, Richard Dalley and the team doctor decorated the hallway and each apartment with red, white and blue things such as centerpieces, cowbells and tablecloths. Planning ahead, Parker also asked the Coles to donate mylar balloons with U.S. flags imprinted, in the event of medal celebrations. The day of Evan Lysacek’s free skate, skate sharpener Mike Cunningham took the balloons to be inflated with helium and then brought them to USA House, where they then remained for medal celebrations in all sports.
