Turning point for audience response systems

n Turning Technologies showcases TurningPoint, an easy-to-use, powerful polling solution for Macs and PCs aimed at senior L&D professionals, on stand A210 at this year’s World of Learning Conference. TurningPoint is a versatile solution for assessment delivery and data collection and offers one simple interface for polling in PowerPoint, polling in any application and self-paced polling. The dashboard allows for instant management of polling, content, participants, sessions and reports and is available in install and no-install versions. Also new to the stand is the highly secure Triton Data Collection System for exams and assessments, and ResponseCard SE. The Triton Data Collection System eliminates the need for standard bubble sheets. Students enter answers to test questions using the ResponseCard NXT handset; invigilator software is stored on a USB drive and administers tests with one click. Specifi cally designed for events, Turning’s low-cost ResponseCard SE keypad can be used for up to 10 days, eliminating the need for post-event collection or management of devices.

Long live the job

n New fi gures suggest that the job for life may not be a thing of the past just yet. Data from a recent report by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development shows that job turnover rate has fallen by 40 per cent since 1998. Mark Beatson, chief economist at the CIPD commented: “We have been told for a long time to expect the end of the ‘job for life’ and more frequent changes of employers and careers but the data appears to have been moving in the opposite direction. “We expect job turnover to be low in recessions because people ‘sit tight’ waiting for the jobs market to improve, but in fact turnover was falling well before the recession took hold. Our research suggests turnover may also have fallen because of changes that have taken place within the workplace. For example, increased job satisfaction and employee engagement may have reduced the number of disaffected

employees jumping ship.

“Employers have also got better at providing opportunities for people to move within their organisations – giving people opportunities to develop and grow without moving employers. Employment legislation might also have played a supporting role.”

Beatson said that while employers benefi t from a low turnover, this also means that they must think of ways to keep employees motivated, engaged, and up to date with business practice. “Innovative organisations require new thinking and challenges to existing ways of doing things,” he added. “A lack of new blood means businesses will need to carefully tap into the knowledge and commitment of the existing workforce to generate a culture of innovation – boosted by genuine cultures of lifelong learning and meaningful career progression.”
