Engagement, effi ciency, capability

According to the latest fi gures from the

Offi ce of National Statistics (ONS), the rate of unemployment in the UK has fallen to 7.7 per cent, down from 7.8 per cent in the previous quarter. This increase in employment growth can be attributed to recovery in the economy gaining momentum*, with the British Chamber of Commerce upping its 2013 growth forecast. These are encouraging statistics for the

the economy, but should not be cause for complacency as the pressure is on for L&D professionals to continue to raise effi ciency and maximise engagement within their organisations. The subject of workforce ‘capability’ is

explored in the main feature (pp. 14 and 15), which stresses the importance of L&D departments aligning their own defi nition with that of the business overall. This topic will also be explored by Rick Jackson, Vice President at DHL at this year’s World of Learning Conference on 1 & 2 October at the NEC in Birmingham, during which he will reveal L&D’s strategic role in transforming the business. Alongside the conference, the World of

Learning Exhibition will showcase the latest learning solutions from over 100 exhibitors and over 40 free workshops and seminars. For a preview of what’s on take a look at the Event Guide, starting on page 27. There’s also the chance to sample the latest learning technologies at The Technology Test Drive area. For an insight into the future of learning

technologies take a look our interview with Niall Gavin, Head of Learning Technologies at First Group on pages 18 and 19. I hope you enjoy this issue of Learning

Magazine and we look forward to seeing you at World of Learning! If you haven’t already, you can register to attend at www.learnevents.com. Enjoy the show!
