Staff demand for training in the workplace grows


n Enthusiasm and demand for employee training has increased in the last fi ve years, according to research by Venture Marketing Group, organisers of the World of Learning Conference and Exhibition. Among the HR and L&D professionals surveyed, 88 per cent believe enthusiasm and demand from employees to be trained has risen, with 41 per cent stating this demand has increased substantially. With pay growth at its lowest ever recorded, 77 per cent of HR and L&D professionals surveyed also believe L&D is indirectly becoming part of the added value benefi ts that employers provide. Andrew Gee, Senior Project Manager at Venture Marketing Group, commented:


“Many employees have become extremely keen to be trained, especially as they know it can help them develop their career. Offering good training and development opportunities is one of the best ways of attracting staff and keeping them engaged, and in turn making them more productive, so it is no wonder that L&D is becoming an added value benefi t provided by employers.” A guide to increasing learning engagement is one of the topics discussed at the free learning seminar programme at the World of Learning exhibition. Stephen Walsh, Director of City and Guilds Kineo, is set to reveal three steps that get people to talk about and enjoy learning.


Alchemy Learning Pathway


n People Alchemy have launched their ground-breaking new SaaS platform, which accelerates the time to profi ciency for people new into a role, at this year’s World of Learning Exhibition. The learning pathway uses the latest informal learning concepts to ‘manage’ the 70 per cent experiential and 20 per cent social parts of the 70:20:10 learning process. The fi rst pathway available off the shelf is aimed at new managers, but anybody can create a learning journey on the platform for any role. Tackling the “Dysfunctionally Connected” Workplace


n 61 per cent of working people own a smart phone. Technically, we are more able to connect than ever before but, according to research by The Ken Blanchard Companies, more than 80 per cent of leaders don’t listen and 82 per cent never praise, redirect, or give appropriate feedback to their colleagues. 64 per cent wish they could talk to their boss about problems with their colleagues, but only 8 per cent actually do. The alarming truth is that our human connections in the workplace are alarmingly dysfunctional. “People crave a deeper human connection at work; they need to feel a more personal and authentic connection with their managers and their peers that goes beyond what technology can provide,” says Ken Blanchard, the best- selling author of more than 55 business books and a world-renowned leadership expert. “Few are satisfi ed with the quantity or quality of their connections at work and without them, the

typical workplace is at high risk of becoming dysfunctionally connected.”


Blanchard continues: “Creating connection in the workplace starts with conversation, yet most working people spend the better part of their waking hours at work, feeling disconnected from each other. We’ve launched the ‘Situational Leadership II Experience’ (SLII) to provide a way to help people understand each other, work better together, and create stronger connections at work. Centred on the world’s most widely taught leadership model, Blanchard’s SLII is a different way of learning that prepares people to lead differently. Participants learn fast and practice slow, combining classroom training with assessments, videos, mobile apps and online games.” The programme features fast-paced learning scenarios, using real work problems to capture learners’ attention and drive home the painful ramifi cations of not using appropriate leadership techniques.
