FLORIDA
The Florida Region’s 2013 Long Course Regional Championship will be held in Venice, Fla., on Nov. 10.
With pristine clear blue waters, beaches filled with prehistoric sharks’ teeth, and numerous other attractions, Venice is the perfect place for competition and vacation. Hosted by Revolution3 Florida, this year the race will consist of not only the long course, but also an Olympic-distance race.
The centerpiece of the REV3 Florida triathlon, the half distance race, will consist of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run, while the Olympic will be comprised of a 0.9-mile swim, 25-mile bike, and a 6.2-mile run.
Swim through warm waters, perhaps even with playful dolphins, then mount your bike for a flat and fast ride through Sarasota County. Enjoy the view while running along the Venetian Waterway. And throughout the weekend be sure to visit the USAT Florida Region expo tent in Maxine Barritt Park. council members look forward to seeing you there.
MIDWEST
To encourage youth to participate in triathlon in the region, Race Omaha and the Omaha Triathlon have partnered with Scheels to promote a being a “Scheels Tri Star” by participating in three events. One very determined youth athlete deserves some special recognition.
Kylee Brown, 8 of Carter Lake, Iowa, has competed the past three years in triathlons and set a goal to compete in all three events and earn the special Tri Stars Trophy.
She won her age group at the Splash & Dash on June 1 and was well on her way until a bike accident on June 12 sidelined her with a broken left arm.
“I was so upset that I would not be able to participate in the two other events and get the big trophy,” Kylee said. “It’s pretty cool that we can get a trophy like this for participating.”
Kylee decided that her mishap would not deter her. Her parents supported their daughter’s determination and perseverance, so they found a way for her to participate safely once her arm healed enough. Still determined to compete, Kylee got permission from her parents and the race director to compete in the Omaha Kid’s Tri on July 20 with a special sleeve over her cast (just five days before the cast was to be removed). She had to remove the sleeve and fasten her bike helmet all on her own in order to complete the race.
