Weiss show delivers exciting entertainment, raises $60,000

Three-time U.S. champion Michael Weiss

hosted his ninth annual benefit show — Ice Cham- pions Live! — at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Md., in September. The event raised more than $60,000 that will be awarded in scholarships by the Michael Weiss Foundation. The near sellout crowd was entertained

by the star-studded cast, offering a blend of the sport’s superstars and up-and-coming skaters. The stellar group included Katia Gordeeva, Brian Boita- no, Kimmie Meissner, Ryan Bradley, Dan Hollander and Weiss. U.S. Olympic hopefuls Adam Rippon, Rich-

ard Dornbush and pairs team Lindsay Davis and Rockne Brubaker also participated. Rippon, the 2012 U.S. silver medalist, skated his short program to Carmen, while 2011 U.S. silver medalist Rich- ard Dornbush performed an exhibition number, throwing in a quad Salchow. The relatively new team of Davis and Brubaker also impressed. The Michael Weiss Foundation (www.MichaelWeiss.org) is a non-

profit organization offering scholarships to aspiring figure skaters and is sponsoring 27 recipients. Weiss, knowing firsthand how much it takes to develop an internationally competitive athlete, established his foun- dation as a way of giving back to the sport that has given him so much, and prior to this year’s benefit, had distributed approximately $530,000 in grants.

Zhou to miss season Vincent Zhou, a three-time U.S. titlist

and reigning U.S. junior champion, will sit out this season after having knee surgery. The California skater reported that

the surgery was necessary to fix a previ- ously unknown medical issue that he’s had since birth. “This is a tough decision, but I will

be more injury-free and worry-free by get- ting it taken care of right now,” Zhou said on his official website. “I am sad that I may not have the chance at Boston 2014 in the Olympic year. However, the Olympic spir- it is always inside me. I’ll come back and come back strong, like a broken bone that heals twice as well. I will fly high!”

Courtney Hicks’ Top 5 vacation

destinations U.S. International Clas-

sic champion Courtney Hicks admits she hasn’t traveled far from her California home, but she’s taken vacations with her family to some pretty cool plac- es. Listed are her top five vaca- tion destinations: Lake Tahoe, Calif.: We

love the mountains! The trees, the lake and the beautiful weather made this a place we’ve been back to a few times. San Francisco, Calif.: We

like to go here every once in a while for a fun break from the daily routine. It’s great for us because it’s not too long a drive and there are plenty of ice rinks for me. Salt Lake City, Utah: We

actually went here for junior nationals a few years ago and all of us had a lot of fun! Since we’re from Southern California, we don’t see snow often and my sisters and I loved playing in the snow there. San Diego, Calif.: We

go here a lot. We like to fish on Coronado Island, and since there’s so much to do around San Diego, we always find plen- ty to do in a week. Phoenix, Ariz.: There’s

something about the desert that my sisters and I really love.
