of Thayer Tutt, chairman of The Broadmoor hotel; was the technical chairman for figure skating for the XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, N.Y., in 1980; and technical del- egate for figure skating for the XVII Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway. He served as team leader at five World
Championships. The Ohio native was the vice president of
U.S. Figure Skating from 1974 to 1976 before becoming the organization’s 19th president. Chuck led an effort to relocate U.S. Figure Skating Headquarters from Boston to Colora- do Springs in 1979, which included property acquisition, financing and construction of the headquarters in its current location. He was a member of the ISU Council
from 1980 to 1994 and was elected an hon- orary member of the ISU in 1994. Chuck was on an ISU ad hoc committee in 1990 to propel synchronized skating internationally. Ben Wright, who served as U.S. Figure
Skating president from 1973 to 1976, said Chuck was a hard worker and would take on many responsibilities before and at an event. He added that Chuck was instrumental in helping bring many championship events to North America during his time on the ISU Council. In January 2008, during the U.S. Cham-
pionships in Saint Paul, Minn., Chuck was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
He was a member of the Council for the
International Skating Union from 1980 to 1994 and served on its constitutional redraft- ing committee. His hobbies outside of skating were golf
and photography, and more recently, com- puters. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, a World and Olympic judge who passed away last year. Survivors include their daugh- ter, Lainie, and son-in-law, Harry Gleeson. The family prefers that contributions be made in his name to the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund, 20 First St., Colorado Springs, CO 80906 or Carmel of the Holy Family (Car- melite), 3176 Fairmount Blvd., Cleveland Hts., OH 44118.

SWENNING John Richard Swenning, the 1953 U.S.
novice bronze medalist and a principal skater with the Ice Capades, Ice Follies and Holiday on Ice, passed away March 16, 2013, in Bris- bane, Australia. Richard, born Dec. 1, 1938, in Port Ches-
ter, N.Y., was also a quadruple gold medalist, Pacific Coast champion and World team pairs alternate. He went on to coach numerous gold
medalists and U.S. and international students. Most recently, he was a judge and technical specialist for Australia. Richard is survived by his children Rich-
ard Swenning, Shauna Cagnoni, Lisa Jones and Dani Sheehan Meyer, as well as David Shanklin, Elsa
Swenning and seven grand-
children. Donations in Richard’s name can be
made to The Morgan Innes Foundation in Australia and the U.S. Figure Skating Memo- rial Fund. VOLLMER Caroline Vollmer, a longtime member
of the Channel Islands Figure Skating Club in Oxnard, Calif., passed away on Sept. 5, 2013, after a battle with cancer. She was an adult silver-level skater and
a test chair from 2005 to 2007. Many CIFSC skaters passed tests at their home rink thanks to her. Caroline was an inspiration to skaters
and a delight to watch. She participated in competitions and shows, representing CIFSC in many adult competitions. She was talent- ed and a hard worker. Her spins were fast and centered; her jumps were high. She skated with speed and confidence and was one of the club’s finest skaters. Caroline had a few signature elements.
Her back shoot-the-duck Lutz was fast and springy. Her forward glide into a catch-foot to spiral was difficult and took so much strength and balance. She also had a hydro- plane-to-loop jump that always left specta- tors cheering. Her friends will miss her vibrant person- ality on the ice. They are grateful for their time
together, her friendship and her loyalty to the club and its skaters.
WESTLING Linda Beard
Westling of Beaverton, Ore., a member of the Portland ISC, passed away peacefully on Sept. 25, 2013, from breast cancer at age 54. She is survived by her husband, Joseph
E. Westling, of Beaverton; sons Andrew and Daniel; daughter-in-law Jordan of Beaverton; parents, Albert and Patricia Beard, of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and mother-in-law and father- in-law, Pearl and Stanley Westling of Flagstaff, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy, in 1981. She was born in Boston on April 22, 1959,
and lived as a child in Orlando, Fla., Syracuse, N.Y., and Phoenix. She attended Northern Ar- izona University where she was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, graduating in 1981 with a degree in business administra- tion. After graduation from college and her marriage to Joe, she worked in the Phoenix area before moving to Beaverton in 1987. In the Portland area, she worked for Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, Enron Broadband and the Beaverton School District. She was an accomplished figure skater,
winning the Pacific Coast Championships in bronze dance as a teenager while representing the SC of Phoenix. After she retired from com- petition, she became a figure skating judge, judging regional and sectional competitions along the Pacific Coast. As her boys became in- volved in sports and youth music, she became an avid supporter and volunteer, keeping score for lacrosse in the cold and rain, cheer- ing hockey in frigid ice rinks and track in warm stadiums, and chaperoning youth orchestra tours. She was a strong, loving presence in the lives of all the members of her family. She was truly loved by all whom she met in life. Contributions to the U.S. Figure Skating
Memorial Fund in memory of Linda and her passion are suggested.
