“it has given me an opportunity to really get to know these skaters. When you are coaching you might get to know a couple of them, but not as many of them as we do. T e perk is being in- volved with these skaters and getting to know them and you know that what you’re doing really does help them.”
And, of course, Millier and Slack will get a chance to experience the Olympic Winter Games. For Millier, getting the chance to be at the
Games in Sochi is something he never imag- ined. He was a competitive skater but retired after the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1990. Slack, meanwhile, began her skating career after being diagnosed with rheumatic fever when she was 7. She made it to the U.S. Championships as a pairs skater and then became involved as an offi cial in a variety of capacities with U.S. Figure Skating, including serving as fi rst vice president of the as- sociation. But until now, neither one has been to the Winter Games in an offi cial capacity. Millier was an alternate team leader in Van-
couver, and although he saw some of the com- petition (he arrived the second week and saw all of the ice dance and the ladies free skate) he was there mostly as a fan. For Slack, Sochi will mark her fi rst trip to
the Olympic Winter Games. She was on a va- cation with her husband in Rome and Istanbul when she received an urgent message saying her
Team USA representatives Joy Anderson, John Millier, George Shybut, Kathy Slack and skater Leah Keiser were at the Junior Grand Prix Final in Sochi, Russia, late last year.
mother was trying to reach her. “I thought, ‘T at’s interesting because my mom died in 1991,’ ” Slack said. “But it was my daughter, Kimberly, trying to reach me. U.S. Fig- ure Skating had tried to reach me but my cell phone was turned off . When Kimberly got ahold of me, she was crying. She said, ‘Mom, you’re an Olympic team leader.’ It was just so exciting and special to hear the news from my daughter.” Over their years as team leaders, Millier and
Slack have traveled the world, from Russia to Ja- pan to Canada, to prepare for the Winter Games. T e two have been with skaters at various Grand Prix and World events, and both were in Sochi last December for the ISU’s Grand Prix Final. “I think it will be very exciting to be in So-
chi,” Slack said. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, and this is really a great opportunity. I’m excited to help these skaters, and they know we’re in their corner.”
