Olympic media frenzy With the world watching, the Olympic sea- son brings a host of off-ice obligations. To help consolidate media requests and

share the athletes’ stories, the U.S. Olympic Com- mittee played host to the Team USA Media Sum- mit, Sept. 29–Oct. 2 in Park City, Utah. The event, held before each Olympic Games since 1988, is a feast for journalists to gather information on America’s top Olympic hopefuls and for net- works to gather promotional video. This year, more than 350 journalists were

in attendance to interview more than 100 Olym- pic and Paralympic hopefuls. Fourteen U.S. Fig- ure Skating athletes were invited to attend the event, and each was put through two days of print interviews, photo shoots and TV interviews. While figure skaters are accustomed to going be- fore large groups of media shouting questions, the team press conference was a new experience for many members of Team USA. “When we stepped into the press confer-

ence area it was just Apple, Apple, Apple,” U.S. sil- ver-medalist Gracie Gold said. “I looked out and saw all these white Apples from rows and rows of Macbooks. The press room was filled with media just typing away.” The Summit serves as a bit of a warm-up for what Team USA will see when it arrives

in Sochi for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. When Olympians step off the ice, they will be inundated by hundreds of journalists in the mixed zone, and some will answer more questions at a formal press conference. At the Games, interviews will be translated in English, French, Russian, Italian, German, Chinese, Mandarin and Korean.

Zawadzki announces coaching change Agnes Zawadzki, the two-time reigning U.S. bronze medalist, announced on Oct. 9

she has commenced training with coach Tom Zakrajsek. She will continue to train at the World Arena Ice Hall in Colorado Springs, Colo. Zawadzki has worked with Christy Krall for the last two seasons, during which she

won a pair of U.S. bronze medals and finished in the top five at three Grand Prix Series events. “I’m excited to be working with Tom again,” Zawadzki said. “I feel

we have done great work together and that I was at my most con- sistent competitively when working with him. Christy helped me improve artistically as a skater and renewed my love of the sport. She is a great woman and coach, and I thank her for everything she has done for me.” Zakrajsek previously coached Zawadzki from 2008 to

2011 after she relocated to Colorado Springs from the Chica- go area. During that time, Zawadzki was the 2010 U.S. junior champion, won silver and bronze, respectively, at the 2010 and 2011 World Junior Championships and finished fourth in her senior debut at the 2011 U.S. Championships. “I am so happy to be working with Agnes again,” Zakra-

jsek said. “She is a very talented skater and we will work to- gether to ensure she is at her best for this very important Olympic season.” Zawadzki began her season in September at the

2013 U.S. International Figure Skating Classic, where she finished fourth. She is set to compete at 2013 Cup of China and 2013 Rostelecom Cup before vying for her third straight U.S. medal at the 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Boston in Jan- uary.
