S .T.A.R. S . PEAK PERFORMERS TOP S.T.A.R.S. ACHIEVERS ARE RECOGNIZED FOR 2013 SEASON by PETER ZAPALO The 2013 S.T.A.R.S. (Standardized Testing

of Athleticism to Recognize Skaters) season wrapped up in August with its first-ever, all-syn- chronized skating event in Massachusetts with the Haydenettes. Participation increased 50 per- cent from the previous year and the reviews of the educational workshop titled “Training, Over- training and Recovery” were strong.

S.T.A.R.S. is a one-day event consisting of

15 off-ice tests in three areas: agility/balance/ coordination, strength/power and flexibility. Starting in one city in 2010, S.T.A.R.S. combines were held in more than 20 cities this summer. The athletes were scored as a percentile for each of these tests against other athletes in their age and gender categories.

Athletes also received information on how

they performed relative to their peers at the same skating level, regardless of age. Many of the athletes and coaches were excited to use this to address specific areas of weakness and help support their on-ice skill development. U.S. Figure Skating Athlete High Perfor-

mance Department is proud to honor the top S.T.A.R.S. athletes by age group, gender and cat- egory for 2013:

Top overall male, top international

selection pool (ISP) male, top male age 15-and-over: Jason Brown

Level: Senior men Home club: Skokie Valley FSC

Coaches: Kori Ade, Rohene Ward; Jon Eng, Ade (off ice)

Favorite thing about training on ice: I love my lessons with my coaches. I actually love doing

drills. There’s nothing better than getting off the ice completely worn out.

Favorite thing about training off ice: Cross- training for conditioning, endurance and strength in the gym with my trainer.

Which part of the S.T.A.R.S combine did you enjoy most?: I love the atmosphere that the trainers who test you bring to the combine. They are fun to work with and so motivating while you are pushing through the numerous difficult tests. My favorite test was probably the standing stork balance. It shocks me how keeping your

eyes open compared to closing them affects your balance. It tests your focus. The standing stork balance is something that I’m excited to work on to improve.

Top overall female, top ISP female, top female age 15-and-over: Ashley Cain

Level: Senior ladies Home club: Stars FSC of Texas

Coaches: Peter and Darlene Cain, Scott Brown, Casey Smith (personal trainer)
