Lost River of the Pharaohs/Voyage to the

Center of the Earth Hyland Hills, USA

Volcans Sacrés

Vulcania, France Entertaining around 350,000 guess a year, the French theme park Vulcania celebrates one of planet Earth’s most potentially ferocious natural phenomena – volcanoes. This season guests, many of whom call in at the park near Clermont-Ferrand en-route to resorts in the south, can enjoy a new €4.5 million ride in the shape of Volcans Sacrés. The new addition to the park represents the first turnkey dark ride project for Jora Vision subsidiary Jora Entertainment, featuring transport by ETF Ride Systems. During the five-minute ride, passengers experience many volcanic myths and legends as they “float on lava” past replicas of six volcanoes including Mount Vesuvius (Italy), Mount Fuji (Japan), Mount Bromo (Indonesia), Likaiu (Kenya) Kilauea (Hawaiii) and the Devil’s Tower (USA).

The lighting and ambience changes from scene to scene, with custom music, on-board sound and even smells adding to the intensity. To add to the authenticity, the spinning Mystic Mover ride vehicles are even covered in volcanic “ash”. Accomplished US animatronic specialist LifeFormations provided the 10 animated figures that can be seen inside the ride, and show control comes courtesy of Alcorn McBride. Squeezed into Volcans Sacrés’s 600 square-metres are a mix of painted scenery, projection and three-dimensional props, and according to Jora Vision creative director Simeon van Tellingen one of the biggest challenges was playing with perspective; making volcanoes look far away when in fact there were actually quite close to the passing ride vehicles. Most of the theming elements were pre-fabricated at Jora’s premises in the Netherlands and then driven down to France. Installation was a “crazy” process given that the attraction constructed across two levels of a pre-existing underground building.

A dark ride in a waterpark? Why not! Back in the ‘90s, Hyland Hills Waterpark, Federal heights, Colorado, opened a couple of themed lazy rivers called Lost River of the Pharaohs and Voyage to the Center of the Earth. The latter, built underground, even has a thrilling drop inside. Now, after 23 years, R&R Creative has completed some upgrades to the ride including a new LED lighting system and all-new audio tracks. Also added were new characters and special effects throughout the attraction. For the Lost River of the Pharaohs, R&R designed various new scenes and effects including a 4ft (1.3m) sculpted head that comes to life to warn tube-riding travellers to turn back. R&R worked with Fox Productions to design, script, and produce the projected effect.
