FireChaser Double launch coaster for Dollywood

Tennessee’s Dollywood theme park will add another rollercoaster to its ride line-up this coming spring in the shape of FireChaser Express. America’s first dual-launch family coaster travelling both forward and backward, it will open March 2014. The Gerstlauer-built ride launches once in each direction, on a winding 2,427ft track. Each 14- passenger train will travel from zero to 20 mph (32kmh) in 1.1 seconds as its leaves the station. A 79ft lift propels FireChaser Express through a “trick track” section where the trains twist from side to side. Riders will also encounter two helixes and six zero-gravity

Toronto. The attraction opens in May and begins with a perilous climb up the side of the mountain then plummets into its core. Passengers will encounter mythical creatures as they navigate 1,000ft (305m) of coaster track through a desolate forest, underground lake and draconian city. The quest culminates as riders enter the dragon’s lair for an all- action finale shoot out. “Thrill seekers and video game enthusiasts will be amazed,” says Canada’s Wonderland general manager Norm Pirtovshek. The new attraction will be realised together with Canadian technology and attraction specialist Triotech, with a ride system by Art Engineering.

moments on a journey that lasts almost two-and-a-half minutes. Towards the end of the ride, a reverse launch sends the train back towards the station. The coaster’s 39-inch (1m) minimum height requirement invites families to ride together. Featuring three trains, it will offer a 740 hourly capacity. FireChaser Express celebrates the volunteer-based fire departments of the 1940s who protected the neighbouring Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The ride will careen through fire towers and the mountainside amid crashed rockets, a destroyed fireworks storage shed, fallen telephone poles and other themed elements lining its path. Perched 12 storeys above the park’s Wilderness Pass

area, FireChaser Express is the first capital investment in a 10-year/$300 million plan for future developments either in or adjacent to Dollywood. In keeping with the Southern charm and hospitality that has welcomed

the waterpark! The DreamMore Resort, located just a stone’s throw from the park entrance, will offer great views of the Great Smoky Mountains, immortalised in the Parton song My Tennessee Mountain Home. Meanwhile the park’s Camp Snoopy kids area celebrates 15 years of family fun with retheming of the Gemini rollercoaster as Wilderness Run and the moving of the Frog Hopper ride, to be rethemed Woodstock’s Airmail, from another area of the park. This will bring the total number of Camp Snoopy rides up to nine. The beginning of a two-year renovation at Hotel Breakers will also begin this winter. 20 SEPTEMBER 2013
