Making a splash in New York
atermania is one of several water-based tea cup rides now available on the market, featuring six 4-seater cars that together can accommodate up to 24 passengers. Each seat is equipped with its own water blaster and as the whole ride rotates around a central axis, the gondolas revolve alternately clockwise and anticlockwise, providing lots of opportunities for water combat between riders.
The first version of the ride to open was in fact a double installation at Luna Park in Coney Island, New York City, where it is one of the largest capacity attractions in the park, accommodating almost 1,000 guests an hour on busy days. Screens around the outside protect passers-by from getting wet, although there are a couple of blasters around the perimeter for onlookers to take aim. Fishkill opened a six-car version of the ride as part of its new 1,600 square foot Splash World spray and play area. Although of “standard” configuration, the ride features a unique Bob the Builder theme and
appears by the name of Dizzy’s Whizzy Whirler in tribute the to cement mixer from the hit kids’ TV series. Here, as you might expect in a waterpark, getting wet is all part of the fun and multiple blasters are stationed around the outside of the ride. The standard Watermania is supplied by Zamperla with a 13m/42.5ft diameter footprint, including perimeter fencing. Each car is accessed by step on the side and riders can get on and off without stepping in the water thanks to a control system that returns the ride and each car to exactly the same position as started. At SplashDown Beach, Dizzy’s Whizzy Whirler appears alongside other Splash Works features including Bob’s tool shed play structure, two slides, tipping buckets, tot bounces, dancing water, geysers and many other surprises. At Coney Island, meanwhile, Watermania is the latest of over 20 rides supplied by Zamperla to the new-look Luna Park as part of ongoing improvements to the amusement area in this fabled part of Brooklyn, New York City.
