Boris Trajkovski Aqua Park CNL acquires Soak City
A new government-funded waterpark opened this summer in Skopje,
Macedonia. Named after the country’s former president, who served from November 1999 until his untimely death in February 2004, Boris Trajkovski Aqua Park was designed and supplied by Polin Waterparks & Pool Systems. The Turkish firm worked with local construction and electrical companies to
build the facility, which includes 10 waterslides, a children’s pool, a wave pool, a leisure river, an administrative building, restaurant and bar, bathrooms, dressing rooms and a first-aid station. Some of the major attractions include a Multisurf waterslide with head-first mat racing, a Turbolance with Flying Boats, an extreme slide with a water- propelled uphill ride followed by steep drops that
end in a splash pool, a Space Boat, which combines the elements of Polin’s Space Hole with its Black Hole attraction, a body slide that propels riders along a slide of both drops and straight-aways at different speeds and an Aquatube that includes both visual and audio special effects. A kids area includes a rabbit slide, giraffe shower, mushroom fountain, mini octopus slide and a pirate-themed multi-level water-play structure with slides, tipping buckets, water cannons and net climbs.
The capital of Macedonia, Skopje is home to about one third of the Balkan country’s population.
The real estate investment trust CNL Lifestyle Properties has acquired Knott’s Soak City in Palm Springs, California. The 21-acre property will be operated by an affiliate company of Premier Attractions Management, led by former Six Flags chairman and CEO Kieran Burke. Premier already operates several other park/waterparks throughout the United States, including four owned by CNL. The Palm Springs park was one of two
Knott’s branded waterparks formerly owned and operated by Cedar Fair. The other, near San Diego, was sold last winter to Sea World Parks & Entertainment and has since relaunched as Aquatica. CNL will retain the rights to use the Knott’s Soak City name through until the end of this year. “Palm Springs’ favourable climate provides for an extended and very stable operating season, and the proximity to LA allows us to draw from one of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas,” notes CNL’s Stephen H Mauldin.
Calypso adds Kongo Expedition
Canada’s Calypso Theme Waterpark, which has just completed its fourth year of operation in Quebec, has been offering guests a new themed river this season. The $7 million Kongo Expedition (pictured) provides a 15-minute/400m (1,312ft) voyage through an “African savannah”, past abandoned beaches, huts, falls, torrents ad flooded caves filled with surprises. Floating along on tubes, explorers should watch out for the giant mammals, reptiles and sneaky primates lurking just around the bend. At the exit of the attraction, swimmers can cool off at Kongo Beach, a family wave pool, or visit the Splash Zone with its many water games. Also new for 2013 were eight new VIP cabanas, a wooded area with 150 picnic tables and three new restaurants. The season came to a close after just three months on 2 September.
