Striking a personal balance for mothers

This is an exciting but scary time for me. I am having a solo show of figurative paintings at the McLean Museum, Greenock, from Saturday, 16 October to Saturday, 23 November with the opening is the evening of Friday, 15 October to which you are all cordially invited.

The title of the show is Balance? - a life in flux and

it’s an exhibition of figurative drawings and paintings exploring the concept of work life balance through self portraits and the struggle in modern times to achieve it. For most people it’s a constant battle to keep everything going and one that strikes a chord with most of us. With the limited time that I have had to paint I felt bad that I was focusing on the strong negative feelings of worry and frustration not achieving it all, but it’s only part of the story. I am constantly reminded to be thankful for an amazing, miraculous and charmed life.

RIGarts’ latest show is The First Ladies of Football by Glasgow-based painter Stuart Gibbs on from 6 to 13 September. This exhibition looks at the history of

women’s football and features some of Rutherglen’s forgotten champions. It traces the history of the woman’s game from its beginnings in Glasgow in 1881 it to the first official international match played in 1972 at Ravenscraig Athletics Ground. The RIG Gallery is the length of a corner kick away from Morton’s Cappielow Park which was venue for the British Ladies Football Club in June 1895. When one of the British Ladies Club players Helen Matthew left to form her own side, Mrs Graham’s XI, she returned to Cappielow to take on a men’s side, Eastend Juniors. Greenock also hosted the first official women’s international. Played at Ravenscraig Stadium it was between Scotland and England as Elsie Cook who was SWFA President at the time remembers.
