The Mill House is a laser-cut kit fea- turing pre-cut interlocking parts, laser- cut shingles, copper flashing for the roof ridge and a selection of beautifully detailed screen doors made for use in this kit. The area beneath the front porch has lattice work panels filling the space between the deck and the ground. Molded plastic shutters and a chimney round out the kit.
The model measures one and one half inches wide by four inches deep. It is a two story frame structure with a full porch across the front of the build- ing. The back door is entered via a small set of wooden stairs.
Trains is an HO scale model of a typi- cal company house. These simple hous- es were built to identical standard de- signs by companies to provide basic housing for their employees and their families. Assembly of the kit is simple and straightforward and presents no major challenges. All of the parts fit well, with the pre-cut interlocking joints at the corners hidden by the trim. The window and door openings are laser- cut and require no additional work to install the windows and doors. The most time consuming part of the construction involves applying the peel- and-stick roofing shingles. The main roof panels are marked for the rows of shingles to aid in aligning the shingle strips, and the roof ridge is topped off with a strip of self-adhesive copper flashing material. Since there was no left-over copper flashing from the roof ridge, I cut individual ridge shingles for the two ridges on the front porch roof. I painted the doors and windows as sub-assemblies prior to installing them on the model. I discovered that the col- or call-outs in the instructions were re- versed (yellow for the trim and green for the building walls). I simply re- versed the colors for a yellow building with green trim. BEST was notified of this error and indicated that it will be corrected in future production. The Coraopolis Mill House kit is a relatively simple laser-cut kit that should be suitable for both the first time modelers project as well as an easy build for the experienced model builder.
