ally, by 1960 competitors Fairbanks- Morse and Baldwin had left the domes- tic locomotive market. EMD was the dominant builder, their GP9, the domi- nant locomotive.

In production between January, 1954, and December, 1959, in the U.S. and un- til August of 1963 in Canada, a total of 4,112 GP9 locomotives were built along with 165 cabless GP9B’s. Sixty-three U.S. and nine Canadian roads bought GP9’s, and many were rebuilt, adding years to their usefulness. A respectable number survived until recent years, and at last report a few were still around. They could do just about any job on the railroad, and to make sure of it, EMD of- fered options that included dynamic brakes, different fuel tank sizes, winteri- zation hatches, and steam generators for passenger trains. shows them to be very accurate scale reproductions of their prototypes. The models are assembled from numerous individual molded and etched parts ap- plied to the usual shell and cast metal chassis of model locomotive construc- tion. All the louvers, latches, lift rings, sand pipes, air lines on the trucks, and other parts are where they are sup- posed to be and are nicely done. The samples represent what modelers call Phase II locomotives, the main charac- teristics being four 36-inch diameter cooling fans, two groups of louvers on the third door of the engine compart- ment, and stamped channel handrail stanchions.

The overall proportions of the engine and the details look good compared to prototype photos, and this includes the plane of the window glazing in relation
