Southern Pacific No. 1315 pushes a pair of PFE reefers to the lemon packing plant just across the arroyo (left). On the old layout, the mainline track curved into a tunnel that went though the backdrop to make the layout a big loop. New track follows that curved path but leads to several warehouses, both of which were kitbashed to fit the old shape and one of them which was given another covered loading dock. There is even room to squeeze in the Spangler’s sheet metal business. Sometimes Pacific Electric equipment switches this part of town (above). Two overnight cars wait by the truncated “C” freight house off Alameda St. (below). The tracks leading to the piggyback loading ramp and its brightly painted PMT trailer have been shortened. Most of the track is easily reached. Gi- ant gas storage tanks are located in this part of town–sometimes surprisingly close to business–and this Walthers kit is a handy way to disguise the end of Alameda St.
have pushed more than they pulled, so the engines could back out of tight spots. The center downtown section of the
layout was cut from the old and moved to the new. There were so many founda- tions, sidewalks and streets that it was well worth the effort, so it went into the moving van protected with a thin piece
of plywood and some bracing. Just about everything else was removed from the layout and carefully packed in moving boxes (see the sidebar). I tried to preserve the track on the saved sec- tion but as others have noted in the past, this is pointless. You can never get ballasted track back together again.
