www.athearn.com. Like its contemporary, the Volkswa- gen Beetle, EMD’s Geep made an in- delible mark on the last half of the twentieth century. Both the Bug and Geep were straightforward, utilitarian machines. And, like the funny-shaped little car that Detroit laughed at, Gen- eral Motor’s Electro-Motive Division non-turbocharged GP7 and its immedi- ate successors, the GP9 and GP18, were durable and proved their worth. Not only that, the VW and Geep be- came accepted as “normal looking.” De- troit was wrong. La Grange was right. The 1,500 h.p. GP7 was introduced in late 1949, and 2,734 were produced through May of 1954. Its designation “GP” signified General Purpose, replac- ing the poorly-selling 1,500 h.p. BL-2. Seeing a need and an opportunity, EMD set up the Advanced Engineering Department and put Richard Dilworth in charge. The resulting GP7 was both truly general purpose and successful.
