News Industry VSDs to the rescue in the midnight hour

OVERNIGHT WORK BY ABB drives supplier APDS allowed Welsh Water to continue to serve its cus- tomers after the two variable speed drives at the treat- ment works failed.

When the second, standby drive failed at around 7:00pm, Marek Cegielski, Welsh Water’s mechanical, electrical and instrumentation supervisor for the region, was faced with a major problem. With no pumping capacity, by 7:00am the next day the area would run out of water as stored capacity would be exhausted. Cegielski commented, “Initially, I called our incum- bent drives supplier, but they told me they could only get a drive to me following a four week lead time.” Leaving the area without a water supply for this long was not feasible. If the pumps could not be brought back online by the following morning, the only other option was to bring water in by tanker - which would have been costly and unfriendly on the environment. Cegielski continued, “I called our capi- tal investment team who recommended calling APDS, as they had done previous installations for us and we were already considering ABB as a drives supplier under a new framework contract.”

APDS is an ABB Authorised Value Provider, and when the call came in from Welsh Water at 8.00pm, APDS’ sales and marketing manager, Alan Jones, responded to get the drives to the site as soon as possi- ble. “I loaded two ABB ACS800 75kW drives and reached the site at around midnight,” said Jones. “By 5:00am we had the drives up and running and pump- ing water before the first tanker was due to arrive.” Cegielski concluded, “Alan pulled out all the stops to get us back in action. At first I did not have much hope that we could be back online by the morning, but Alan and APDS sorted it all out in the middle of the night and we have had no problems with the ABB drives since they were installed. www.abb.com

Confidence in your cooling

RITTAL’S COMPLETE RANGE of cooling units have now been inde- pendently certified. Tests were per- formed in accordance with the current DIN EN 14511- 2 at the TÜV Nord’s test centre for refrigera- tion, air conditioning and ventila- tion technology in Essen, Germany. As well as defining the test con- ditions for determining cooling output and energy efficiency, the standard also states that the speci- fied cooling output may not be lower than the measured cooling output by more than eight percent.

During extensive tests all Rittal

TopTherm cooling units satisfied the stated performance data and in some cases the cooling output was up to ten percent higher than the value specified.

In addition to the total cooling output, the electrical power con- sumption of the cooling device was also determined in order to calculate the energy efficiency ratio (EER). All Rittal TopTherm cooling units may now bear the TÜV Nord mark of conformity. www.rittal.co.uk

A boost to training

THE INSTITUTION OF Mechanical Engineers and awarding organisation EAL, have joined forces to boost the number of centres offering insti- tution approved engineering technician training schemes. Students undertaking one of these approved schemes will have the assurance that the scheme meets the exacting stan- dards set by the institution. Stephen Tetlow, chief exec- utive of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said, “Current estimates suggest that the UK needs to double the pipeline of new recruits into engineering by 2020 to avoid a severe skills shortage. “We want this partnership to encourage more people to pursue engineering technician training schemes.” Ann Watson, managing director of EAL, said, “The engineering and manufactur- ing sector is vitally important to the UK economy - provid- ing over six million people with jobs in more than 800,000 businesses.

“The forecasted skills short- age is a barrier that must be overcome if we are to ensure healthy economic recovery, pro- vide much needed jobs and maintain the UK’s standing as one of the foremost manufactur- ers in the world.” www.eal.org.uk www.imeche.org
