SICK OD Mini – the Ultimate ‘Lightweight’ for High-Speed, Precision and Accuracy

CP to the Rescue C

P Electronic’s microwave & PIR absence/presence detectors have been chosen to control the lighting in Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Headquarters, in addition to six whole-time fire stations throughout the county. Installed as part of an invest-to-save energy efficiency programme, which also included the upgrade of most fittings to high-frequency T5 luminaires, CP’s products were the preferred choice as they offered a flexible and reliable lighting control system.

A mixture of CP’s MWS3A-PRM and EBDSPIR PIR detectors were used in rest rooms, equipment rooms, watch rooms and in appliance bays within all the Northamptonshire sites. The MWS3A-PRM can be used flush or as a surface mounted unit with a unique adjustable sensor head to allow for more precise detection. By changing the angle of the head, different detection patterns can be achieved to suit the specific application. The EBDSPIR PIR is a self contained, low profile detector ideal for narrow ceiling voids that can be mounted into a ceiling tile or via a surface mounting box.

ITH THE new OD Mini short range distance sensor, SICK has delivered one of the world’s most lightweight and precise displacement sensors incorporating an easy-to-use display and control. The SICK OD Mini achieves micron resolution and millisecond responsiveness in a rugged, compact and lightweight unit making it ideal for precision measurement and positioning applications where high levels of accuracy are demanded, especially at high speeds, for example electronics press: [for positioning of robotic gripper arms in electronic assembly & photovoltaic manufacture] automotive press [for positioning of robotic gripper arms in automotive production] general automation press: [for positioning of robotic gripper arms, or in precision machining]. The SICK OD Mini’s high performance measurement capability also means it can be used for quality duties such as inspection of manufacturing tolerances, and even for sorting and classification. The SICK OD Mini’s CMOS receiver promises high machine availability by eliminating the possibility of false readings due to the brightness, colour or reflectivity of the object’s surface. “The SICK OD Mini is a real advance in short range distance sensing – especially for providing an ‘eye’ on the business end of moving equipment such as a robotic gripper arms, or for similar dynamic applications,” explains David Hannaby, Product Manager, Imaging & Measurement for SICK UK. “SICK has long been a leader in sensors for distance measurement and positioning guidance and the OD Mini more than lives up to SICK’s reputation in this field.” The SICK OD Mini is available in two rugged IP 67 18x31x41mm casings. The stainless steel version only weighs 70g, while the aluminium casing weighs just 40g. Three detection ranges are available from 10mm to 20mm, 20mm to 60mm and 60mm to 150mm with resolutions of 3 m, 8 m and 30 m respectively.

Midnight installation of ABB drives brings Welsh Water back on stream

two variable-speed drives failed at its Tynywaun water treatment works. APDS, based in Bristol, is an ABB Authorized Value Provider. When he got the call from Welsh Water at 8.00 pm, APDS' Sales and Marketing Manager Alan Jones responded to get the drives to the site as soon as possible. "I loaded two ABB ACS800 75 kW drives and reached the site at around midnight," says Jones. "By 5:00 am, we had the drives up and running and pumping water, before the first tanker was

due to arrive." Adds Cegielski: "Alan pulled out all the stops to get us back in action. At first I did not have much hope that we could be back on-line by the morning, but Alan and APDS sorted it all out in the middle of the night and we have had no problems with the ABB drives since they were installed.

pecialist cable manufacturer Tratos Cavi S.p.A has recently completed the construction of a Faraday Cage test site at the company’s headquarters in Pieve Santo Stefano, Italy. Measuring 24m x 16m and standing at 14m high, the new Faraday Cage enables Tratos to effectively administer AC Resonant Tests on site, allowing testing of up to 220kV of nominal voltage cables and up to 20km of medium voltage cable. AC Resonant Testing is now the standard method of testing higher voltage cables. However, it is vital that AC Resonant tests are carried out in a controlled environment, and this is exactly what the new Faraday Cage provides. The facility incorporates a new innovative locking system to ensure perfect shielding from any sort of external interference. Inside are sophisticated tools for testing and an adjustable high voltage reactor which, together with the exciter and the regulator, comprise the heart of the system.
