KNX members team up
A
challenging home automation project at a home with an equine centre in the Scottish Borders has seen two members of the KNX UK Association working closely together. The result is an installation that has fully met the aspirations of the property owners. It has also demonstrated how any electrical contractor in the early stages of using KNX can offer clients all the lifestyle and energy saving benefits of the technology.

Eric Maddock specified Sill Lighting UK for the original metal halide scheme to light both the atrium and sculpture in 2004. However both have now been replaced by an energy and maintenance saving LED solution, again by Sill UK. The lighting design accentuates the undulating form of the sculpture, complementing the architecture that surrounds it.

The latest generation, MLD EVO II DIM includes eight ballast versions for use with most T5 lamp types and offers excellent energy efficient performance. The MLD ballasts are contained within a sleek, low-profile housing and automatically detect the
lamp, setting the operating parameters independently with the DALI interface to allow dimming control from 1 to 100 percent. ollowing extensive testing of a wide range of dimmer modules available in the UK, Megaman UK has placed the Varilight V-Pro JQP401 dimmer at the top of its list and will now be recommending the unit as its preferred dimmer module. The Varilight dimmer comes with a factory pre-set to dim to 10% but, as the unit is a smart dimmer, this can be manually programmed quickly and easily to reduce to 1%. The same V-Pro dimmer module can be found across the wide range of decorative metal finishes offered by
Varilight.The dimmer can operate between 2 and 10 lamps from the Megaman range irrespective of power and with no de-rating calculations necessary.

ith sustainability at the heart of the design of Rochdale Borough Council’s new development at Number One Riverside, a Delmatic lighting control system is playing a key role in minimising energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Number One Riverside comprises two S-shaped six-storey buildings joined by an atrium with link bridges at every level. When complete it will bring together around 2000 council staff from more than 30 buildings, saving over £28m in ongoing maintenance costs. It is also designed to reduce the Council’s carbon footprint through a number of energy-saving and other sustainability measures. The lighting, for example, is linked to a Delmatic DALI bus-wire lighting control system linked to a central PC. Full emergency testing and monitoring is also provided throughout. The lighting in all internal and external areas is addressable and the lighting is controlled in relation to daylight, presence and absence. This high level of addressability within the system has enabled the designers to establish control parameters that best suit the design and usage of each space.
