Feature Batteries & Chargers
Quality v time v cost - who wins? C
The development of battery powered products can be a battle. There has been some heated debate over commercial viability versus product quality. However, it’s the war waged within spreadsheets that often shapes a product’s future. Here, specialist battery supplier Creasefield explain
utting component costs and push- ing specifications to the limit in order to meet a budget is one thing. However, when those com- ponents are combined in a battery pow- ered product their behaviour can change dramatically and levels of risk within the product as a whole can spiral. Ensuring that every component within a product behaves as planned across its performance range, in every intended operating environment, is a necessary challenge. Incorrect battery design and integration will at best result in inconvenience for users - at worst a catastrophic failure. In the same way, everyone involved in a product’s development must work together to deliver the quality and user experience that will make it safe and successful. Commissioning a battery design based on specification alone is risky. It’s better to find a supplier that understands a
product’s intended performance, application and lifespan. A supplier that can work closely with you to make the most of development time and budget will help to deliver a product that meets your expectations. Products may be brought to market quickly through the use of fully tested, UN 38.3 transport approved, lithium- ion batteries in standard configurations. Alternatively, depth of experience cou- pled with on-site prototyping and manu- facturing mean custom battery designs can be realised quickly without fuss. Choosing a supplier with a range of tested and approved products or full on-site design and manufacturing capability can take months off a product’s time to market. Time is money but value engineering for better cost of ownership can make an ordinary product commercially outstand- ing. Choosing the right battery chemistry
can result in lighter product weight, reduced shipping costs, higher power and longer lifespan. Where quality is built-in at an operational level it's never an afterthought and never left to chance. Look for rigorous quality accreditations from independent bodies such as Sira. And don’t forget that UN testing and approval for transportation is a requirement of all lithium batteries. It’s possible to develop a winning bat- tery powered product without cutting corners. The key to success lies in a coor- dinated approach to both the product and battery designs - choosing a partner that can take advantage of resources and technology, limit risk exposure and give a product the best chance of success.
