Feature Event Preview The Energy Event is back!
With more than 7,000 visitors and over 160 exhibitors, The Energy Event will be returning to the NEC in Birmingham in 2013 and will be dominated by the latest distribution systems and the UK’s leaders in procurement and electrical innovation. Electrical Engineering magazine takes a closer look
T
aking place on 10th-11th September The Energy Event will have something to offer everyone involved in the elec-
trical industry, from end users and OEMs, to panel builders, contractors and wholesalers.
Alongside a packed exhibition hall the event will also feature a diverse free two-day conference programme, featuring talks from the industry’s leading researchers and key decision makers from across the energy sector.
Conference programme This year’s conference programme offers the richest source of innovative talks, practical case studies and updates on current legislative debates. The free to attend, CPD accredited ses- sions are split across two major the- atres, The Energy Insight Theatre and the Energy Information Theatre, with additional events also scheduled in the ESTA Theatre and the Hosted Content Area. Variety is at the heart of this year’s
line-up of speakers, with event organ- isers welcoming academic leaders, television journalists, regional end users and energy procurement profes- sionals to share their views. Further details of the event’s key speakers can be seen in the table below.

Featuring alongside talks by these energy industry leaders is a range of case studies from end users and local authorities. Julie Allen, energy man- ager for Nando’s Chickenland, will draw on the company’s success in her talk, ‘Smart metering in practice: what are the billing implications and how does this impact usage?’

Edward Davey MP, secretary of state for energy and climate change Energy Insight Theatre, 10th September, 10.00am What impact will future energy legislation have upon my business? This is the topic that Rt. Hon. Edward Davey MP will address in his conference talk, drawing on his extensive industry experience as secretary of state for energy and climate change. Davey’s talk will address how the UK’s current energy effi- ciency strategies combat ever increasing future demand, and provide insight into the latest developments in the Energy Market Reform
Lord Robert Winston, professor of science, House of Lords member Energy Insight Theatre, 11th September, 11.15am Charismatic member of the House of Lords, professor of science and TV presenter, Lord Robert Winston will make his another not to be missed seminar. Winston’s talk ‘How humans think: how are we motivated to improve the world around us?’, will draw on his own cutting edge research as one of the world’s pre-eminent experts in reproductive medicine
Magnus Walker, head of energy trading, Government Procurement Service Energy Insight Theatre, 10th September, 2.15pm Magnus Walker is responsible for managing the procurement of energy directly in the commodity markets on behalf of various public sector entities, local authorities, health trusts and other public organisations across the country. Walker will take part in the panel session debating energy contracts, a topic hot on the government’s agenda following George Osborne’s recent pledge for a ‘dash for gas’
Dieter Helm, economist Energy Insight Theatre, 10th September, 11.15am Professor Dieter Helm is the independent chair of the Defra Natural Capital Committee and member of the Economics Advisory Group. His specialties include infrastructure, regulation and the environment, with a particular focus on Britain’s and Europe’s energy, water, communications and transport sectors. Helm’s conference talk is titled, ‘Tackling the tough decisions in order to keep the lights on’
Andy Pag, eco-adventurer Energy Information Theatre, 10th September 11.15am Andy Pag’s eco-adventures range from flying across the UK powered by old plastic bags to travelling across the globe in a school bus powered by used cooking oil. These journeys are one part of a series of experimental expeditions used to explore the potential for eco-friendly travel, a message he’ll relay in his talk, ‘Fuelling a trip around the world - with waste’
Rosie Boycott, journalist Energy Information Theatre, 10th September, 11.45am Journalist, commentator and chair of the London Food Board, Rosie Boycott is a regular Energy Event speaker and will specifically look at the future of small- holding and sustainability in her talk
