August Recess Your Time to Meet Your Offi cials
HANKS TO OUR STRONG MEMBERSHIP, TSCRA HAS A GOOD REPUTATION among lawmakers in Washington, D.C. If you stroll through our nation’s capitol you’ll see lots of TSCRA’s blue POSTED gate signs
and meet lawmakers who are eager to speak with members of TSCRA. The relationship between our association and our elected offi cials is
a crucial one. It continues to be our main weapon in the fi ght against hefty taxes, increased regulations, infringement on private property rights and stifl ing the free market. Multiple times a year your TSCRA leaders travel to Washington, D.C.
to meet with Congress. Armed with our respected membership and a strong political action committee, we debate, we discuss and we get things done that help the cattle industry. The more times we can sit down face-to-face with our elected offi cials, the more effective we are. This is why it’s so important for each one of you to schedule a
meeting with your senators and representatives during the month of August when Congress breaks for recess. During this time you’ll have the chance to visit with them and discuss the major issues that are affecting your industry. Two of those major issues are immigration reform and the Farm Bill.
Immigration reform When writing this column, we were unsure of the status of any
immigration reform bill, but we did know that Washington was fi - nally working toward reforming our immigration system. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives are considering a true fi x to our country’s guest worker program. TSCRA members need to make it clear to Congress that the live-
stock industry needs a steady, stable year-round workforce and a guest worker program that allows immigrants who want to work in the U.S. an opportunity to do so. We need to tell Congress that any such program should allow willing workers the ability to come to the U.S. on a work visa and stay for at least 3 to 5 years before they’re
