the calf production process so you can determine where improvements need to be made.

Estrus, exposure and conception The fi rst step in producing a calf

is exposing a cow to a bull when she is in heat or estrus. There is an 18- to 20- hour period is when cows are ready to accept a bull. A cow cycles into heat every 18 to 24 days. Dr. Jane Parish, Mississippi State

University, says failure to show de- tectable estrus might be caused by factors such as transportation, over- crowding, heat stress, ovarian cysts, anatomical abnormalities, hormonal abnormalities, genetics, low body condition, defi cient dietary energy, low dietary phosphorus, low dietary vitamin A, poor heat detection and uterine infection. In a natural breeding system,

exposure is accomplished by put- ting bulls in the pasture with the cows. Utilizing the proper number of bulls with the cows is impor- tant for achieving good exposure. The traditional recommendation is to use a bull with 25 to 35 cows, although a highly fertile bull can breed as many as 50 cows. “Reduce the cow-to-bull ratio to

about 1 female per each month of the age of a yearling bull,” recom- mends Dr. Glenn Selk, emeritus Extension animal scientist from Oklahoma State University. “For

UPS NEON 6198 - 42749778 Very popular in the Hereford breed, Neons have brought lots of muscle and structure to herds throughout the country. Our Neon, 6198, has helped us by giving more correctness in our calves’ stature. They are very powerful in appearance with lots of eye pigment. We purchased him from Upstream Hereford Ranch in 2008 and now have a good many females in production at the ranch. Our customers have shown a real preference for his sons.

BB 1065 DOMINO 5077 Pretty hard not to notice his frame. He’s been on the ranch since 2006 and still as sound as ever. Always shows excitement when turned out with the cows even at his age. It seems his sons show the same trait of dependability. He was bought from BB Cattle Co. in 2006 at their sale in Connell, Washington. His dam was sired by BP Landmark 126H which contributes to his size.

BB 013 SANDMAN 7008 Here’s a Sandman, Mark Donald combination that has produced some very reliable offspring. Sandman cattle have been very popular with our customers with strong bone and muscles that provide confidence that cows will get bred even in harsh environments.

SR SAGA 320X Now seeing the first of his calves, they are what we were hoping for. He is a son of CJH Harland 408, a popular bull in the Hereford breed, and has mixed well with our other bloodlines. Watch for his sons especially out of Neon females. This looks like a great path for our herd to go into the future.
