HE SUMMER MEETING OF THE TEXAS AND SOUTHWESTERN Cattle Raisers Association board, committees and members took place June 10 to 12 at the


Hyatt Hill Country Resort, San Antonio. Two general briefi ng sessions and separate commit-


tee meetings allowed cattle raisers to learn about and discuss current issues such as changes in the cattle industry during this third year of drought, especially in the packer, stocker and cow-calf areas. This topic was discussed by John Niedecken, L&H Packing Com- pany, Jennings Steen, Crossroads Cattle Company and Alfred Bausch, Sam Kane Beef Processors. TSCRA Director Ed Vaughn, Boerne, a member of


the Texas Water Development board, discussed the new water plan for Texas, which was passed in the 2013 legislative session. Find a complete report on this plan in the Issues and Policy section of this magazine. Sean Kyle with Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart-


ment and Steve Manning, Natural Resources Solution, gave an update on the Endangered Species Act and its effect on landowners.

TSCRA committees met to discuss resolutions to be


considered for sunset review in the Legislative and Tax and Marketing committees, the Wildlife Committee got an update on the feral hog and predator situations and the Natural Resources and Environment Committee met to hear about managing water quality through proper land stewardship and the Buck Creek Watershed. State Sen. Glenn Hegar, Dist. 18, spoke during


Tuesday’s luncheon. Hegar serves as a member of the committees on fi nance, natural resources and agricul- ture, rural affairs, and homeland security. Afternoon committee briefi ng and meeting sessions followed the luncheon, where attendees were updated on the state and federal legislative sessions, the Texas Animal Health Commission activities from State Veterinarian Dr. Dee Ellis and studies on eradication of ashe juniper. The summer meeting concluded Wednesday with


a general session and board meeting during which TSCRA offi cers and leaders reported to the member- ship on association activities. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) President Scott George gave
