A Compelling Story of Resilience

By Ellen H. Brisendine ehbrisendine@tscra.org

M

OTHER NATURE STARTED THE WILDFIRE THAT BURNED FOR 21 STRAIGHT DAYS in April 2011 on the Jackson Hereford Ranch near Strawn. And, Mother Nature put it out. However, during those 3 weeks, the

Jacksons, friends, professionals and volunteers did all they could to fi ght, fl ee, direct, divert and just plain survive the fl ames that claimed a third of their ranch. Read this compelling story by Erin Worrell in the features section of

this issue. It is our policy to have the people who are quoted in articles review a draft for accuracy. When Dena called me to approve the facts in the story, she gave Erin a signifi cant compliment when she said Erin had reported the events accurately and had rightly captured the meaning the family wanted to convey. We are proud to bring their story to the readers of The Cattleman. In the Theft and Law department, you’ll see a tag in the Crime Watch

reports. In a case out of Oklahoma, thieves stole a truck and used it to steal 3 rolls of copper wire. Right before we went to press with this is- sue, an arrest was made in the case. The truck and wire were recovered. We couldn’t fi t the back story in this issue, so we’ve included it as bonus

content on The Cattleman Plus for the iPad and Android tablet. Special Ranger John Cummings says some observant fi shermen were

key to this recovery. What do you think was the clue? Go to The Cattle- man Plus or to thecattlemanmagazine.com to fi nd out. Haven’t downloaded the app yet? I invite you to do so. It contains the

same great content as the print publication so you can accumulate a whole library of issues to read and refer to at leisure. The Cattleman Plus also offers relevant videos, audio fi les for more information and the ability to link to more resources. I hope you’ll take a look at this unique form of your magazine.
