HOUSTON MAN WENT INTO CUSTODY IN WASHINGTON COUNTY AFTER AUTHORITIES arrested him May 17 on cattle theft charges. Dernattel Paul Foucher, 43, is accused of stealing 9 head of cattle
from a Harris County rancher. According to authorities, Foucher stole the livestock early morning on
May 16. The next day, the victim and a witness reported the cattle stolen to Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Special Ranger Brent Mast. Mast sent out an alert to area authorities with cattle descriptions and the
name of a possible suspect. Special Rangers Jimmy Belt and Doug Hutchison alerted the TSCRA market inspectors working the sale barns in the area to be on the lookout. Within minutes of the alert, Hutchison received word from the market inspector at the Brenham livestock auction that 1 heifer and 1 cow matching the descriptions were sold for $1,900 under the suspect’s name, but that the suspect had not picked up his sale check. Hutchison notifi ed Washing- ton County authorities who took the suspect into custody when he returned to the sale barn for his check. Eight of the animals were returned to the owner. One calf was killed in a

vehicle accident involving the suspect. “Unfortunately cattle theft is not a rare occurrence in this area of the state,”
said Hutchison. “However, TSCRA’s market inspection program allowed us to locate the
cattle and the suspect quickly. Thanks to cooperation with other law enforce- ment agencies, we were able to arrest the suspect and return most of the cattle to the owner.” Foucher is currently jailed in the Washington County jail on felony livestock
charges. He is also being held on felony cattle theft charges out of Arkansas. His total bond is set at $25,000. If convicted, Foucher could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fi ne on the Texas charges. TSCRA would like to thank Washington County investigators Damon Weg– ner and Mark Whidden for their help apprehending the suspect.
