Simplifying and Improving a Complex Welded Assembly

onarch Industries, Winnipeg, Mani- toba, Canada, re- cently worked with its customer Morris

Industries, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to convert a family of six weldments into machined D65-45-12 ductile iron castings. T e castings in the RAZR disc drill

are used on a new single disc opener system mounted to an agricultural implement frame. It is actuated hydrau- lically via a tractor hydraulic remote, which provides hydraulic down force to accurately follow the ground while opening a seed furrow. Seeds are placed within the open

furrow and the furrow is closed and packed with a minimum level of dis- turbance. All of this happens at high speeds and requires signifi cant strength, weight and torsional rigidity. Certain welded components (the

scraper boot and rear link) required diffi cult welding procedures to avoid warpage and assembly interferences. T ese issues were eliminated through the conversion to casting the part. Casting the opener allowed Morris

to strengthen it in critical areas where it was needed. T is added to the weight of the opener, which is benefi cial for a disc, for proper penetration of the openers. T is strategy adds weight where it also increases strength and allows the elimi-

nation of required frame weights for a net savings to the customer. Cast-in features like handling loop holes (rear link), drafted bosses for wear washer assembly (mounting bracket) and bolt head holders (lower link, top link, mounting bracket) make assembly and handling of the openers quicker and easier. Morris Industries manufactures

agricultural equipment including air seeders, harrows, packer bars and bale

carriers and is a global agricultural equipment supplier. “With production facilities already

running at near capacity levels, Morris had limited labor hours available for any signifi cant build numbers of this new product,” said Monarch Industries’ Mark Hildebrand. “By eliminating fabrication time for welded components, Morris can focus on assembly of the openers only and greatly increase the number of disc drills that can be built and sold in a calendar year. Parts are received machined and ready for assembly without any further operations required.” 
