University of Alabama Opens Metalcasting Facility T e University of Alabama (UA),

Tuscaloosa, Ala., has opened a new metalcasting facility to encourage creative collaboration between engi- neering and art students. T e facility will provide space and equipment for teaching, research and service to metalcasting and processing indus- tries for students in the College of Engineering. It adjoins a metalcast- ing facility used by the College of Arts and Sciences, and students from both colleges will share expanded and renovated collaborative space. “I am excited about the opportuni-

ties the new joint-use foundry will present our students,” said Dr. Charles L. Karr, dean of the College of Engi- neering. “I strongly believe students from the arts and engineering can learn from each other. T is space allows our students to enhance their creativity, and it is a plus for the College.” T e new building houses a machine

and construction shop used by many departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as a workshop used by the College of Engineering. Students and faculty in both

colleges will learn from one another about the diff erent kinds of mold- making processes, as well as how to work with various metals and alloys for diff erent purposes. 
