Ian Gotts: is the Youth AC what the spectators want to see?


The increasing volume of dissent about the America’s Cup all but drowned out the hype and excitement of the July 4th celebrations and opening ceremony. In the build up, the City bought into the dream of a summer of spectacular racing just off the City front between several teams, believing it would be a huge draw for millions of spectators.  That dream is fading as fast. Only three challengers had the budget to get their technically advanced, experimental and unproven AC72s to San Francisco. The fatal accident involving the Artemis team has meant they will not get their 2nd boat to the start line in time for the start of Louis Vuitton Cup. This leaves just ETNZ and Luna Rossa ready to race.  Now the suggested boat design rule changes prompted by the safety review after the accident have dragged the America’s Cup back into the jury room.


Déjà vu. Isn’t this why spectators and sponsors forgot all about the Americas Cup year. It was written off as “big toys for rich and spoilt boys”. Whilst the
