Putting aside the criticisms of the latest iteration of the America's Cup - spiralling costs, the subsequent lack of challengers and safety worries - from a pure sailing point of view the new generation of turbo charged flying catamarans are nothing short of technological marvels. To master these supersonic beasts the America's Cup sailors have had to be right at the top of their game just to take them out sailing and have had to develop a whole new range of skills to get them around the racecourse. In the week leading up to the start of racing we talked to the helmsman/tactician pairings at Emirates Team New Zealand - Dean Barker and Ray Davies - and Luna Rossa - Chris Draper and Francesco Bruni - to hear from the horse's mouth what it takes to race an AC72.
